Thanks for the reply Dappers...... ;-))
At the moment the plan is to deliver the bike over to the fettle venue the day before so measuring should work out OK...... Not sure how we'll handle the outcome though.......

Ermm noooooooo that misses oot the Quality  and Hand Craftedness ...and also reasonably importantly the fact that its the Fan Club of his Shim retaining System.....what is Quality and Hand Crafted.  So its TPLQHCSRSFC for short.

For TPLFC...see his manager.

I've got a brilliant idea ! :)

As the No.1 fan of The Pa Larkin Quality Hand Crafted Shim Retaining System Fan Club, I've been aware of the recent failed plot by copyright fraudsters, to infiltrate the Postal Service in an attempt to steal the The Pa Larkin Quality Hand Crafted Shim Retaining System in transit.   I'm also aware of the recent nigh on apocolyptic circumstance that happened when The Pa Larkin Quality Hand Crafted Shim Retaining System was thought to have been lost.

My solution is to make a more substantial Pa Larkin Quality Hand Crafted Shim Retaining System using a vintage solid hardwood back door !  Brilliant eh ! :)

No more putting it into a small tread ear pan ear, and wayyyyy to big to fit in the postbox too !  You also get the benefit from vintage of it being Quality Hand Crafted.  Obviously if the door actually belongs to Pa Larkin, we wouldn't even need to change the name. :D

Well, it's certainly a big step up Mal.  Checking the valve clearances is reasonably straightforward but adjusting them (swapping the shims) is a bit more technical involving setting up the timing after removing/refitting the camshafts.

If you are unsure,  get one of the experienced carpedians to help you, once you've done it it's easier the next time.

Just take your time. dablik did his with virtually no previous experience, his came out ok.

My advice is to turn the engine over by hand using the bolt head in the alternator cover hole after you done them and make sure all the marks line up, before trying to start it on the button. If you have got anything wrong and it goes tight, you can't damage the engine gently turning it by hand.

You will have to wind the cam chain tensioner back in, and hold it with the T shaped bit of metal a new one comes with or a small screwdriver. Pop it back in the engine, release it and it will spring out to tension the chain.

You need a decent set of feeler gauges and the manual from JBX's excellent site.

Dapleb, I've got two shims left over from my recent experience with doing the shims on the 9'er, 190 & 188, do you want these as a donation to the TPLQHCSRSFC?

P.M. an address to me if you do and I'll drop them in the post.

If Yamaha engineers were real geniuses, they would make the Cam lobes wear at the same rate as the valves wear into the seats. If this were done we would never need to do the shims.

As for can anyone do this?, well yes, but you do need the proper tools, lots of patience, time and have read all that you can from the manuals and tutorials.

As well as a good set of feeler guages, a micrometer 0-25mm and one of those extendable magnetic pen shaped things are very very useful.

It also helps if after you carefully arrange all of the shims and buckets your daughter doesn't kick them and scatter them all over the garage!!

Having done the shims once I will do it again. I'm well on the way to becoming a TDM Master, but I've still got a few stages to complete, carb balance and stripping the forks.
