I've had a go at fitting it this morning. Found a problem.

I'd got the ballast stowed and the wires led into position, plus the harness fed thru' the rubber sealing cover - see pic #1. All ready to go and the orientation of the bulb worked out. Protecting cap off, reach in, locate the base, swing the spring clamp thingie over and ....

Bu**er.

The base on the HID bulb is about 1.5mm thick. The H7 bulb is mounted on a plinth about 10mm thick. The spring clamp does not take up the difference of 9mm and the bulb is as loose as ... a loose thing.

See pic #2.

So, who has done this mod on a 900 and what did you do about this? I can specify a split annular ring to fit and take up the slack, but is there a quick or easy or cheap fix?

 - and while I'm asking, I assume I simply crack off the bottom part of the HID bulb protection cap once it is all fitted and working OK?

I've gone ahead and bought a kit with H7R @ 4,300K (the highest lumens output).

:wifgeni:

Either that or use some dense foam padding to hold them in place.

If you go down the ebay route see if you can find a UK seller as the ones from China take an AGE to arrive.

Completely forgot to mention this bit when I posted earlier.

Yessssss.

Thank you Sir.

Ordered. Awaited. Delivery due between "Jul. 31 and Aug. 18"

Meantime I've fabricated a packing piece of wood (chipboard really!) - It's in the garage just now with the varnish drying. I've learned I cannot use a fretsaw very accurately round a circle while keeping the saw upright.

Dabbers - do you mean which way does the lamp fit in the headlight unit?

If so - the base on the lamp itself will have the same lugs as the OEM lamp, so will only seat down in the holder one way.

With the OEM lamp there is the fabled plastic spacer that the prongs of the standard H7 bulb connects to, then the bike wiring loom connects to that.

With HID the lamp is essentially the same shape fit, it just doesn't have the prongs that standards have so the need for packing / spacer to stop it acting like a dick in a bucket (thats a direct quote from SWMBO when I was explaining the same thing to her).

Be warned - cake & coffee will probably be required, unless you strip the front end to give more access.

Getting the lamp oriented and the spacer on without un-aligning the lamp can be a biatch :s

Plenty of coffee and homemade cake here, in fact fresh out the oven is a nice pear, banana and almond cake to be filled with a brandy buttercream  :P

Had my bike apart that many times i could do it blindfolded now in minutes, well practised in that art, it's elektrikery what gets me but there's a good write up in KB, and as its all plug & play even a novice fettler should manage !!

Here's my report on fitting the HID with my temporary adapter, and then the eBay item.

I made a ring from a chipboard-and-melamine shelf, and sealed it with varnish.  post-179098-0-93043200-1376255945_thumb.

This was not wide enough to take the upper part of the retaining clip so I shaped a plate to suit.  post-179098-0-17692300-1376256020_thumb.

I tucked the larger ballast below the screen and zip-tied it to the bracket in the centre.  post-179098-0-48280600-1376256110_thumb.

The wiring was tidied away and white zip-ties used to keep it under control on the LHS.  post-179098-0-73694600-1376256169_thumb.

That all worked OK and the beam aim seemed fine using my marks on the garage wall.

The eBay adapter arrived and is less thick than my DIY attempt. I worried it would be secure.  post-179098-0-43576200-1376256342_thumb.

It seems to work OK, holding the bulb securely and correctly. I aligned the slot in the adapter to the 9 o'clock position and the clip was a good fit onto the back of the flange. Keeping the bulb, adapter and wiring aligned and fingers off the glass was a major challenge in the fitting process.

For info the support bar goes below the bulb for alignment into the back of the lamp unit, as seen here thru' the front of the headlight glass.  post-179098-0-98572100-1376256596_thumb.

I'm holding off fitting the main beam until I see how good this is at night-time when the days get shorter.

Are all TDM headlights crap or is it just mine? They are pretty dim and yellowish. Ok for driving, but not as bright as I'd expect. The dial lights seem dim too. All other electrics appear fine, warning lights are bright, engine turns over well and so on.
