Four years ago in post #14 above I reported:-

I used a Rawlbolt to remove the front bearing collar......

I've done it again at least once since, using the same tools quite successfully and quickly.

This year my Rawlbolt would not go into the hole in the collar because the mini circular spring holding the four leaves of the expanding part had got crossed and they jammed at the entry to the hole. Pic 1 shows the poorly shaped spring. I tried to reshape the spring but its springiness defeated me.

No problem, I think, I'll just get another. Oh no I won't, not in my town anyway. Loads of the cast variety, none of the stamped metal type. However while discussing the problem with the clued-up assistant I spied expanding bolts for plasterboard on display. Got some of them, I think. See pic #2

That pic shows the before and after of a successful extraction.

The bolt collar was held by a locking plier and the bolt head turned by a loooong Phillips screwdriver to expand and mash the body inside the hole. Pic #3. Gentle taps were needed to remove the combo but, it worked.

These bolts are more easily found than the required Rawlbolt, but are obviously not reusable!

I do wonder if the bike has been chilled and the frame has contracted with the recent spell of sub-zero weather. Next time I might give a gentle waft of the blowtorch around the mounting lugs first, but there's all that grease to consider. Hmmmm

Darling, can I borrow your super-hot hair drier?

Thanks, Chris.

I went looking online for a new Rawlplug and found they are named Shield Anchors and come in a variety of sizes and configurations. The Toolbox chain seems to have a good stock and there's one not far from me, but I don't need a set of ten!

So I had a think about what to use to replace the distorted springy wire and had a Eurika moment regarding my Aldi box of O rings. I reassembled the bolt with a pair of the small ones to get:-

The rubber will get in the way of inserting the bolt (stop sniggering at the back) but I should be able to roll the front one back once the bolt has started into the hole. I'll have to wait to next year's service to find out.

Once round with some sticky tape?

I reckon even that would make the overall diameter too big for the hole, and also restrict or even prevent the leaves from expanding to do the job intended.
