......

Steve - I guess you're and electrician by your response? My dad was one and that's the sort of thing he would have said.

No, but I worked around and with engineers and craftsmen of various types for most of my working life.

So, I've checked some of the things today:

1. Chain has no tight spots, checked every link to be sure.

2. The chain meshes well with the rear sprocket (yet to check the front sprocket)

3. Engine mounting bolts are nice and tight

4. Checking the two wheel bearings I finger checked for damage and then with the wheel on, side to side and up and down( if that makes sense). There was no movement with nut tightened.

5. The chain adjusters were against the alloy stops both before and after testing (i.e. when everything tightened up).

I'll have another look at the small sprocket tomorrow. I thought it was uniform on each side but will double check.

I've had the bike since almost new (couple thou miles) so bearings, seals, spacers are factory spec.

I have done the check/set/repeat but give I've done all the checking everyone has been so kind to provide I'll I'll have another look at the small sprocket tomorrow.

I thought it was uniform on each side but will check.

I'll see if I can find two long straight edges to check everything is in line.

If I've missed responding to anyone's input, sorry!

Something horribly wrong with the swingarm bearings ? Does it ride like a clown's car ? :)

A real headscratcher

Check the pitch of the small cog definitely fits the chain in that the rollers go into the bottom of the tooth, you definitely have a 525 sized chain and sprockets. Check sprockets for bright wear marks which would indicate something being out of line.

Thanks, no it's fine at the rear, a bit jittery at the front but I think I know what that is.

Lee - I bought a 525 chain and it said 525 on the box, is there a way of checking if it is 525?

I've to take the front sprocket off and check yet.

ok, so, I spent all afternoon today going for a short ride, backing off chain, repeat. After 4 goes it the chain seems alright although I've not been any real distance. It is making a noise but I think it might be the plain front sprocket.

So tomorrow, hopefully, I'll give it a reasonable run out and see if it is cured.

Maybe try another chain and sprocket set? Nothing else seems to be working. Or better earplugs!

£100ish for new set -I'd sooner get it resolved if I can and the plugs are pretty good (though really tight chains almost scream).

So I think I've worked out what I did wrong (dumbass!) I think I didn't back off the rear brake calliper. I tried Lee's suggestion of re-checking the front sprocket for odd wear and  the Ognibene one back on while I had it stripped. I reassembled but noticed the bolt on the calliper looked like it hadn't been adjusted for a while. Re-adjusted and all has been well since.

So thanks to all those who helped.

Whoops, that M8 bolt can also seize in the arm and benefits from removal and a lube now and then. I have made nice stainless coned washers in the past to pocket the head of an M8 cap screw. Catsbum has one because I couldnt put back the rusty bolt.

How did we all not come up with that one?

Lee, wouldn't your coned washer hold water?

It doesnt usually and its all in 316 stainless. Unaffected by anything roads can throw at it. A black plastic plug fills in the hex key hole of the cap screw making a neat fitting.
We didnt think of it because we assumed he had adjusted chain according to the manual.
The force is to press down on the swingarm so the M8 bolt does virtually no work
