Oh alright then, but I feel like an imposter!! I've always had a soft spot for these...(no Chris, not Saddleworth Moor!!) since I went with a friend to Colditz on one, it just did everything, all weathers, autobahns and forest roads. Wouldn't swap for the TDM bit it's a nice luxury.

A pal of mine bought one of those instead of a TDM (it came down to which came up for sale in his budget range first). He's a new biker with no previous experience but he really like it.

I have an old thumper, a 1996 KTM 620. One cylinder, one spark plug, one pumper carb, one coil..... simple, minimalist and fun. The torque pulses shorten rear tyre life though !

This is turning into a GS thread...be careful, but, yeah, nice and simple is part of the appeal. Mate with a tiger 1050 sport has a Sertao as 2nd bike and loves that too. So I suppose I've kinda been tempted for a while. Regarding tyres, I've gone for a new Anakee for the rear.

Fired it up after doing the valves.. started eventually and was running sweet then started to faff about as if running out of fuel but plenty in the tank.
So tank off now and will try auxillary supply

I bought one of these last year after selling my Himalayan. It is great fun to ride and I did the autumn tour of Scotland on it. If I could only have one bike, then it would have to be the TDM.

Well do you ever feel that you shouldn't be allowed out on your own!!!!!
Started my 95 Mk1 after shimming the valves and it fired up but died and refused to start!!!
Fired up fine in an aux tank today then I realised id turned the tap the wrong way or so it appears
Red backwards I think!!!!!

I had the same Rotax engine in my trusty Elephant rally bike, an Aprilia Pegaso trail. Brilliant runner, for a single would sit at an indicated 80mph all day on the autobahns. Plenty of oil changes and i sold it at 56,000 miles. Still running sweet.

Yes but...you'll end up forcing the battery into the box or have to modify the box by cutting to fit the leads I think, plenty of mk2a battery's available though so just buy one instead of a mk1 battery.

Edit...buy yuasa or motobatt, you'll regret a cheap option,tdm won't run long or we'll with a cheapo..

Battery on my mk1 is a GS, think it was fitted when ChrisG owned the bike some 7-8 yrs ago.  Never let me down yet, touch wood, and the bike is often laid up for weeks on end without starting.  Prolly helps to have the electrical system spot on, I remember my first mk1 used to suffer from current loss and the battery often needed charging up.

Tapped some Renthal 755 bar ends M16x1.5, I made myself a tap guide to keep it nice and straight. This isn't for my own bike but another TDM.

The best thing about being old is we did all our stupid stuff before the Internet was invented, so there’s no proof.
