Balanced my carbs with the aid of TyredNGrumpee. A big thanks to him, his bottles & Arduino digital Balancer. :good:

Fitted the cheapo Chinese handguards, bit of a faff on right side & think Ill need to cut a section out of that one

 

Actually rode the thing for the first time since November  :-)

These look like a cheap set I got from ebay last year. They did not fit well and were rubbish quality.

The metal looked like melted down bottle tops and was cracked on delivery.

I got a refund and bought a pair of Acerbis Dual Road( or dual sport --can't remember)

These were twice the price (about £60 iirc) but well worth it. I am very happy them.

I have Renthal 755 bars and the Dual's fit  and provide good protection and look good and not too big

We used the super accurate, tall, narrow, olive oil bottles first.................

........... then we connected up the digital creation, calibrated it and watched

........ the end figures sat at either 144/143 and followed each other precisely for over two minutes.

So I reckon that's a success. Trouble is I'll have to make the device a little more robust, now that I know that it works.

Then we were able to calibrate Rolf's dial gauges. 1,2 and 3 were spot on. We were able to spot that gauge 4 wasn't and put it to right.

The two tall bottles are shown pre carb balancer. They are now half filled with red auto transmission fluid, linked with pipes and are air tight save for the tubes to each carb,

The object of the exercise is to get the fluid levels in both bottles to stop moving. It doesn't matter whether the levels don't match. So long as the fluid surface area in each bottle is the same, if the levels stay stable, it means that the vacuum either side is the same.

The bottle cross section has to be identical through the height of the vessel. A smaller cross section = greater sensitivity. So it helps if the bottles are tall too, so that you get a breathing space.

 

You won't get a more accurate means of balancing a vacuum, which is why I checked the digital setup against these babies.

 

When I've finished I leave the engine running and walk away for 5 minutes. If the levels are stable within a gnats, then I gauge that as a success.

Ah ok, great test! No, but I will be after one of those, that's a nice bit of kit! Will see how I can comms with him, tricky as stated on the site, little English.

I didn't do it myself, but picked up my niner from the workshop on Saturday following a big, big service. 72K miles, so it was valve clearances, plugs, oil & filter, air filter, coolant and brake fluid replaced, front forks overhauled, steering head bearings greased, rear suspension linkage & swing arm bearings, stripped & greased, throttle bodies balanced, brakes overhauled and new rear pads. Probably a load of other stuff I've forgotten too :huh: .

I do the interim services myself, but every 24k miles, I let a proper mechanic give her the once over. The only problem was the bush (part No.2 in the diagram) and the bearing (part No.3) were completely shot. The mechanic said it was because they were on the chain side and muck gets flung in past the seal causing the damage. I had thought the rear suspension was a bit off, but assumed it was the rear shock wearing. Rides a lot better now. Major downside was the bush was completely out stock in Europe (according to Yamaha) and had to come from Japan :dunno: , meaning a three week wait!!!! Ready for the next 72K miles!

Bloody Yamaha parts service! 3 weeks? I've waited 3 months for an air filter for my DT from Yamaha. Waited 6 weeks for sprockets a few years ago, so once bitten, twice shy. I ordered a filter from a Japanese parts site at the same time & it arrived in 3 days. Cheaper, too.

 

My poor wee bike is looking the worse for wear so I'm thinking of taking it off the road for 3 months & doing a full renovation, too. I have standard headers which I might send off to be chromed or plan B is to get some new headers which match the free breathing nature of my Kerker pipes. Any suggestions for an 8fiddly?

Kedo.de used to sell larger diameter pipes Harv.  There's also another company that used to sell larger wans but the name escapes me. :unsure2:

 

Edit: Just checked, Over Racing used to sell 'em but neither seem to sell them now. :(

Interesting, i needed 7 or 8 changing at 26000 (was a bit late) was this also the 1st time you had to service the forks Chris, if so i might have to buy a yella one  :)

Took the hugger off and gave it a clean ready for the overpriced plastic extension to be siliconed on :)

It had new seals at about 12K if I recall correctly, but other than that I just change the fork oil every 12K.

Buy a yellow one anyway mate, they're faster  :yeahbaby:

Pretty sure Shadowjack had Over pipes on his bike before he did the dirty. Lovely, they were.

Yup, can confirm - Over Racing stainless/carbon goodness.

Still checking in from time-to-time with the Carpe-verse. Not really suffering from seller's remorse. Give it another minute  ot two...

That said, the DR650 is  proving to be an effective tool for commuting and getting around the gravel back roads. (Harvest season down under - not another F@#$%g John Deere on the road). Cheap to run and quite simple on the mechanical front. Quite a bit lighterer that the TDM (not that it was that heavy). I've done the usual with the DR to make it suitable for the volumetrically enhanced gentleman, so that it doesn't look at all like it did when I took it off me mate. Who has since acquired a KTM 690 Duke - very nice.

I've dropped the 9er off this afternoon for the start of a similar lot of work Matlock. The front forks were a bit saggy so I'm getting new fluids and seals as it must be 30 thousand kms since they were last done. This is judging by the previous owners receipts. I've done 20 thousand since I bought it last year and it's beginning to feel sheepish up front now.
I'll drop it back to them in a month to get the rear shock and linkages tidied up as well. I might not do the swing arm bearings but it's cheap insurance if the rear shock and that is off too....
I've also gotta do shims as it's just passed 80 thousand so that'll be a month or two later. I just can't afford it all at once and I don't have the space to do any of out here right now.
Still I'll get the 9er back tomorrow with spruced up forks and she'll feel ten times better I'm sure!
