It's starting to look that way Chris, as everything else is now new. Rode the bike yesterday and it felt like a new bike again, so all good in that regard. The noise occurs if you hold the bike vertical (doesn't do it of on side stand) and you move the rear up and down by less than an inch just taking up freeplay in something (or that's how it feels) with a tiny knock at each end of the movement.

With all the leverage and pivots I doubt they were any better from new, every bearing needs a clearance and they all add up especially through a swingarm.

Well, I don't remember it doing it 18 years ago when I bought the thing. Dodgy build quality or what!  :rotflmmfao:  :rotflmmfao:

So, with possibly a new shock looming, what's the general consensus on what's good at a sensible budget?

Have you ever had the shock rebuilt Trev? May be about time, otherwise a Nitron without all the extras has served me well, plus they will refurb them for about £120. I can remember my blue one having that knock at some point.

Still original Chris, so long overdue. Ive got the rebound turned up several clicks now to get it right once its had a run to warm it up a bit. Its a little too stiff when cold, so probably due. Can we get the originals rebuilt? I thought they couldnt be done.

Mine passed its MOT today but for some reason the speedo's stopped working. Thought I might have left a plug off after messing with the dead alarm but all looked well.
Anyone got a spare sensor.

I dont know if they can be Trev. Catteclan - you havent had the rotor off recently and put the washer in front of it have you? Easy mistake to make.

Can you disconnect one end of the Shock and do the bounce test again ?  If there's no noise it's definitely in the shock.  If the noise is still there.... ??

Took it out for its first outing of the year and to check that the re-chromed stantions along with another set of seals and bushes had cured the fork seal leak. It would appear that normal service has been resumed.😀👍
While waiting for the stantions to come back last year, I had taken the opportunity to fit a new clutch cable and this was its first outing. What a difference!! Clutch is now smooth and light and so much easier to control than with the old, original, cable.
Two wrongs dont make a right but three rights make a left.

If you feel spendy, I'm about to sell the MT-09 Ohlins, without spring.

I'ld need to double check there is clearance to fit the standard TDM spring first.

£250 ish

only done 2000 miles so like new

UPDATE - the standard 9'er spring will fit with ease. Using the standard spring gives the correct spring rate for the bike, but with all the benefits of temperature stable Ohlins damping. Drop me a message if you're interested

Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.

Ouch!

Ouch indeed !  But I got a pattern one a few years ago and it stretched like knicker elastic. I made it back to base with half the strands of the inner cable broken. So I'm most reluctant to go for another pattern one. However I do like Venhill stuff so if they can make me up a beefy replacement I'll go with them.  They don't list a cable for my 1991 TDM.

But if it's £50.00 that's the price for reliability.
