Fettling Day: Saturday 22nd May
Place: L36 5XE
Itinerary: 9.30am or there abouts
Bay 1. Replace Emulsion Tubes Service & Balance Carbs followed by fault finding session, where did we go wrong session and finally an identify the left over part quiz. Tutor; Professor Studley Ramrod.
Bay 2. Head Gasket replacement: Tutor; Doctor Erny 'The fastest gasket changer in the Northwest'
Bay 3. Oil Pressure Switch Installation: Tutor and Star Turner; Master Engineer BODGER with Hons. The one and only Leehenty, supported by dablik on
Bigred TDM.
Refreshments:
Tools: Have a think guys about what you need i.e. specialist screwdrivers or fabricated dodah's for reaching those hard to get places and bring them along. I have torque wrenches 5nm - 25nm and 20nm - 110nm, impact driver, big hammer and an adequate stock of super glue, araldite and liquid metal for those little mistakes!
Anyone got vac gauges?
Oh and I'm a trained first aider, specialised in the application of elastoplast to scuffed knuckles!
Charlie
Any questions, requests just PM me.
Lee, I'll take one of your switches and associated bits.
Ok ,
I got Morgan vacuum gauges (two sets) and a special 90 degree gear box screwdriver for setting carby things. I will put a switch aside for you.
Plus special 90 degree socket set as well. Will try to bring all specialist things I can think of.
I have another batch of switches made by then, there will be six units available which I am reserving for the fettle day. (£13:50 plus a free bag of 25 10mm copper banjo washers, a one time never to be repeated offer)
I might have the big red led thing for the dash sorted by then too.

Um, I will have an LED solution for this by the time the fettle comes along. I can do the 12 volt 10mm dia hyper bright red led in a 13.3mm chrome bezel for 99p on top.
Update:

This will mean the spare hole will have to be reamed out slightly up from 10mm, but I have a special tool for that. It might be so bright it blinds you, but you WILL know you have a problem. Does anyone know the diameter of the terminal on the back of the temp gauge where the live feed will come from ? If you do, let me know and I can bring lots of the right sized end bits plus a proper tool to put them on with.
I have a further 5 switches coming from France, but they may not be here in time enough, for me to modify them in time for the fettle.
For those who are not lucky enough to get a Citroen modified one, there will be some of the brass adapters for the VW sensors available. (five)
UPDATE:
I have one only of these VW sensors, but this is what it looks like.

This switches at a higher pressure than the citroen ones, 1.5 bar 17 -23 psi, not 0.5 bar which is 8 psi.
Roughly speaking you need about 10psi of oil pressure per 1000rpm.
e.g. 7000rpm requires 70psi oil pressure
Allowing the oil pressure warning light to illuminate at a higher pressure is an economical & effective way to protect engines from failure.
I need a bike to try it on and see what the pressure is at hot idle.
However, I only have ten of the 10MM LED solutions coming, So the maximum bikes is ten on the day no matter what.
BigRed has a time constraint on the day, so he will have priority.

Yeah that's the one. Rubber isn't it?
I gotta order it tomorrow. I'm seeping oil from one of the rocker cover bolts and from the hole in the side of the engine. What is that hole for anyway?
And does that mean I'm looking at the head gasket as well?
I've got basic tools, a few sockets and extention bars. A manual. Some SA tape and tie clips, assorted.
Studley, I'll meet you and ride down with you if you fancy

The hole is for draining water away from the spark plugs. Hard to know where the oil is leaking from but all should be revealed on fettle day
EDIT: My planned route is M1, onto Woodhead Pass, then M67 onto the M60, then M62. Where d'ya wanna meet up Erny ?

Lookin at the Haynes, it's a terminal screw, the wires have eyelets on the end. I'm guessing 2-3mm screw thread diameter/eyelet i/d. Might have my cowling off before long so will measure 'em then.

Anyone got a compression tester they could bring along as I'm curious to know whether she's producing enough whumph! I can then
plan accordingly for the next stage of her refurbishment.

I will have five of the inside dash lights available on the day, or you can go with the outside the dash on the surround led solution. Have the choice on the day.

Hammerman,
Very kindly let me poke about at his bike in bits, measure this and that when I popped up to see him and deliver him some bits. I will bring a selection of all parts required on the day. The terminals are 4mm so I got a bag of 100, which incidentally is the size of the small screw on the sensor.
The TDM 900 guys asked, I delivered, but not as easy as an 850 which are much easier to work on.
On the day bring a small selection of cable ties and a note book for those bits you wanted to know. Hammerman did a fantastic guide on this job.
