I will ask the engineering company round the corner from work if they could machine the bar ends for me (should be in there tomorrow collecting a lorryload of stuff for BOC - normally have to wait a while for the machine parts to be crated up so they might do them 'while I wait

Hopefully I can get the guards when I get paid on Friday. And maybe some TDM stickers to go on them.
Talking of which - TDM stickers. Don't know how well they would stick to the guards though.

well I am sorry to hear of your woes

my instructions were for the 900 origonally , however others have fitted them to the 850 and if i remember corectly the throttle side did have issues.

I had to bore out the sleave on the lever & drill out the threads at the bottom of the master cylinder but other than that no big issues.

Yes, you can wire them directly to the battery. But if you do so and forget to turn them off when you park the bike you will have to recharge the battery before you ride it again. I think some of the members here are regretting their choice of wiring.

I used the + feed to the horn to switch a relay with the power to the relay from the battery with an inline fuse.

Indeed - especially at 12:30 am this morning whizzing back from work around the M25 with my heated grips and new guards!
FWIW, I didn't need to chop or cut the guard on the throttle side - it's a snug fit to the hydraulic reservoir but fits fine nonetheless. I did need a bigger washer than provided for the underside though.
Suzuki have recently changed the part number and price for the guards.
The old number is 57300-27820-291 @ £20.50 + VAT
The new number is 57300-27822-291 @ £27.57 + VAT
By luck my dealer managed to inadvertently order using the old number (and price) and gave me a 10% discount. The parts themselves haven't changed so Suzuki still sent a box with the new number stamped on it. Confused? Everyone was! Didn't complain though. Means I've done Oxford grips and VStrom handguards for about £75 total - result!
