Still got the Tiger and the ER6 but cant afford to run three so when everything runs out on the ER it gets sornd. I should sell it but SWMBO gave it to me , she could have sold it. It's took me through some horrendous weather. It also has some brilliant memories as well.

The Tiger, well I dont know. It will get its big service done at Triumph in case I  want/need to sell it. Folk aren't bothered about the small services either side of the 12K one but the stamp is needed in the service book for the biggie.

Physically the Tiger is about as big as I can manage these days so I will make a decision this summer.

Givi do a full kit for the Suzuki so when the Triumph eventually goes it will be my tourer. :good:

Got to pay for it first though

Thought you wudda gone for the V-strom Sam, bigger tank and more protection.  Or stayed faithful to Yamaha and gone for the MT07.

Tried to stay with Yamaha. Was waiting for the details on the SCR950 but when it was announced it would retail at £8600 that was that idea binned.

You can get a lot more bike for £8.5K than that. Went over to Ian Bells twice. My wife even came with me once & loved the XSR700 but on the way back we both said this is a very long way to go should there be a warranty issue. Carlisle must be the only city in Europe without a Yamaha dealer :sorry:

The Tiger ticks all the touring boxes & I will never sell the Kawasaki so when I was in the Triumph/Suzuki shop tyre kicking the SV's when SWMBO was Christmas shopping the man said "go on, get it you know you want one" so I did & my little blue beauty popped through the letterbox the next day.

I did look at a mint Ducati 696 but they must have designed it for King Louis from the Jungle book.

The SV fits perfectly :good: It will probably be March before I can ride it but I can spend a lot of quality time in the man cave till then

Thanks for the offer, I'll see how I get on after I've been for a ride.  Just remembered I've got the viton seals for the butterfly shaft, part of the kit I didn't need for fixing Sideys mk2.  Just a bit apprehensive about removing and re-fitting the butterfly's without ham fisting it.  Also, not exactly sure what I need to remove in order to fit the seals.  One end of the shaft is sealed with a metal cap that looks like it's been crimped in place and I dunno if these need removing or not

I tried removing the butterflies on a 1984 CB750 Honda & wished I had never started it. The little screws were slightly peened over.

Are you sure the slides are ok & the left one isn't sticking slightly just as it starts to move. My Virago535 :blush2:  did that once & I had to give the bore & slide a little polish with brasso and a very soft rag. This would explain why its not always the same. :um:

Virago ! lol

I swapped over the slide for anudder wan, still got the same problem.  Might try giving them a polish though. :good:  Yeah, in the past I also had a go at removing a screw off the butterfly and also buggered it up using the wrong screwdriver.  Should be easier with the carbs split, the throttle springs removed and some kind of support on the throttle shaft.

Got the carbs split and also managed to loosen the butterfly screws, quite a simple task when the throttle shaft is supported. Didn't need a JIS screwdriver.  I used a plug socket to support the shaft. :)

Unfortunately, I can't get the shaft caps off.  Has anyone ever removed these ?

Attached File  shaftcaps.jpg   76.15KB   0 downloads

They're made of extremely thin metal, tried using pliers to twist them loose but they just cut into the metal. Don't want to deform them as they might then snag on the shaft nut.  Tried popping them off with a bit of persuasion from a large flat blade screwdriver but the thin metal just folds.

I guess I could simply cut them off and find a suitable plastic cap as a replacement ? :unsure2:  I think they're only fitted to help stop any ingress of dirt, but they might also be air tight and help stop air getting into the venturi.  That said, the shaft does have a seal soooooooo, f**ktifiknow.

Had a read of the Litetek 'how to dismantle carberoonies' tutorial but it doesn't mention the caps.

They are probably a miniature version of "core plugs" like what were in the engine block on my Capri. They had to be pierced to flick them out then the new ones popped back in.

If they are only seals you can seal the hole with anything. I sealed a M6 wire hole in my top box with that hot glue stuff you heat with the little gun.

Its lasted 12 years.

You really are getting into new territory here. It was running fine when you put it in storage so whats packed in while its been standing.

What is the colour of the left plug compared to the right one. I still think you should drop the needles one notch & see what happens

Just thought I could fit the viton seals and eliminate any possibility of air getting into the carbs through the shaft seals, and they'd be good for another 20 years.

It might just be a slight blockage somewhere,  bike seemed to run better when I went to Nottingham last Satdi.  It even started up fine after being stood for 2 hours.   Being stood for a year it could be residue or dried out seals.

Whilst plug colours and raising the needles might tell me something, they won't explain why the bike splutters at 2000rpm occasionally.

Anyhoos, I'm gonna leave the shaft seals for now.  Checked the air cut-off valves whilst the carbs were split and they're fine.  Have also given the carb passages a good blast with compressed air.

Still not tempted with a carb clean-up in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Supposed to be the cure-all for carbs.

I have to tell you Ian, that dont fill me with confidence    especially after the carb guru is struggling a lil bit, was'nt carbs the reason i got the 9r initially !!

Do you give lessons   :D

Litetek is getting a read ta.

Just pretend you didn't read it then. :P  It's prolly me being ott rather than it being a big problem tbh.  I wouldn't see it as being a problem if it was your carbs anyhoos.
