Hi Guys
Are front fork springs doable at a fettle?
I have a set of progressive springs and oil to go in, but lack the knowledge or experience to tackle it on my own.
If they are, I will bring them along.

Don't see why not. It isn't that big of a job! I'll give you a hand matey. As long as Ali has a jack we can use to get it off the ground at the front end? Calipers off, Wheel off and slide them out.

So have I! I'll see what can go wrong and decide whether to do mine!

In answer to your questions:
Yes, I've got a trolley jack and also a scissors jack.
No, I'm not serving those sausages. I felt a bit of a dick asking for them, so went for Cumberlands instead!!
This looks like being quite informative. I have never done the front springs on a bike, so I'll learn something. Similarly, I intend fitting running lights at some time so can see what needs to be done there too.

I have a main stand fitted to mine, so should free up the jack for someone else.
Does anyone else have a 1996 mk2 with drain plugs on the front forks?
The reason I ask is mine does, but according to the haynes manual and the parts lists only the MK1 had drain plugs and I am now worried that:
a). I have the wrong forks on my bike which may indicate that it has had a hard frontal at some time.
b). I have the wrong springs for the forks.
I look forward to peace of mind or a few sleepless nights!

Ok, throw abuse if you want, riddicule will be accepted - panic over - mine does not have drain plugs - it has pinch bolts at the bottom of the legs!!!!
Sorry guys, I am a plank.

Doggy measure your hole up the middle of the steering stem at the lower yoke, I'll make a pin so you can use my front service stand to pick it up.
No problem dropping the forks out then.

Having had recent experience of doing the valve clearances, I can confirm that it really is quite a big job needing a stone cold engine.
I did it myself as I couldn't afford the £450 quote, in the end it probably cost me £100 in parts and tools. I felt pretty pleased with myself when I eventually got it all back together.
There are lots of things that can go wrong, as mentioned earlier, the water tube in the top of the head can be a bit of a pig, dropping something down a plug hole "as I did", not being able to get hold of the correct shim, needing a head cover gasket etc..etc...
Unfortunatley I don't think I can get there on Sunday, it would be good to meet up with you all.
I could do with learning how to do a carb balance and how to do the forks oil change.
Enjoy yourselves, enjoy the cake!!!

Seeing as I'm the one who started the "previous post" I'd be mad to miss out on this opportunity....... count me in.......
I'm clueless & tool less but willing to learn all I can. An oil change & valve clearance check are on the agenda plus anything else the guru's suggest.......
With regard to servicing my 900 on the 24th March does anyone have a list of the consumables I should get together beforehand? Oil & filter are obvious but it's the little things (new plug washers etc.) that I wouldn't want to miss out on?
Also, an expert opinion please........ is it realistic to fit in a service on the same day as doing the valve clearance checks? The plan is to deliver the bile over to Ali's on the Saturday afternoon so I presume the first thing to tackle on the Sunday would be the valve checks and on from there? Are there "consumables" needed around that too? New gaskets etc.........
Thanks in advance for any and all your help.......
