no slower the 850 stator has less power

Nah, it means there's less drag on the magnet rotor....therefore more engine power going to the rear wheel

It's faster! It's the mod I should have done long time ago when my friend on his 1050 speedy won our race to the billabong near Mersing. Down sizing the alternator only makes sense if you like me live in a tropical area, no extras, no fog lights, no heated grips or seats... And of course use the brake light as little as possible, hahahah. In theory less drag on the magnets in the flywheel should result in a free'r running engine.

Humoured enough ?

It's not a joke ! If you grab the winded part with your right hand following the winding direction, stretch your thumb and tit will point to the north pole of this electromagnetic assembly.

Or was it south ?

I salvaged the 2 stators off my dead 850s. I had one in the box for my last tour and ChrisR got the other. Even if it is weaker than the niner, it is a job you could do at the side of the road and if you are miles from home, will not spoil your holiday. You can then get the old one rewound at your leisure and put back in if you are worried that the 850 one won't last.

The very reason i purchased one Ali, just in case, as you said even as a temp fix miles from home or abroad at least you could continue, a no brainer really, hopefully wont have to use it..

Edit... Ali apart from having to change the plugs, is the wiring length long enough or does it need to be extended do you know !!

I think you need to extend the stator wires. The pickip wires might fit well enough....doing them together is much easier then trying to do only the stator

Thanks Chris, so i presume i need a gauge suitable for at least 30 amps for the stator to reg if i recall from reading this thread.

Actually i have been trying to locate a matching plug for the pickup wires without much luck, anything i need to be aware of when choosing a new plug or will automotive generally be okay ?

Would prefer to make sure i have the appropriate part than bodging it..

I'ld be inclined to carry a gas soldering iron, solder and heatshrink....but you could easily make a temp repair by splicing the old plug and wire tails onto the replacement alternator using a chocblock type connector if you really had to.

If the plugs came to hand, a simple extension lead with an 850 female plug one end and  a 900 male rectifier plug the other would be good, but probably a luxury

Bigger the better :)  You can't overheat an overly large connector :)

Try a look here. i know they're in the states but their service is good and not too pricey. I think that the plug for the 900 reg/rec is a Sumitomo type...should find it here if anywhere...  http://www.cycleterm...connectors.html

Or  maybe it's a Furukawa ? ... ooooh scroll to the bottom of this page... http://www.cycleterm...wa-qlw-250.html

Actually i think the reg/ec plug would be less difficult to pull the wires from than the other plug, got a porcelain choc block but it's a bit on the big side, also have 30 amp ones as well, think a splice in for a temp fix would do the job now you mention it  :good:
