Thinking on, it's prolly unlikely to be carby balance if it was running ok before, and if they are ok then adjusting it would/might make matters worse as regards finding the fault.  Can't help thinking why the plugs are dry and sooty though.  Did they smell of petrol ?  Any wheezy noises coming from the expansion tank after its been running ? Engine oil and coolant nice and clean ?

Have you tried wiggling the wired connectors on the coil, my old mk1 had this problem.  Looked ok and felt ok but obviously wasn't connecting fully until I wiggled it.

long shot had a problem with my 3vd after replacing the emulsion tubes  finally remembered i had fitted slightly longer fuel line so i could position the tank for access to battery head etc.

but you had to route them as you put the tank down i hadn't and had kinks in the fuel line would start but not rev

Oil is new, coolant was okay and clear but not checked it again yesterday, cant say i noticed any wheezy noises, expect would need to listen out for them, even if oil were getting in to the coolant i dont think it would present this issue, checked coil spades a couple of times but not wiggled them while it's running, will try it..

Yea,yea, yesterday was perfect as well with no rain but, your's truly is spread all over the couch of work this week with a bad case of man flu, likely picked up from one of the girls at work who was extremely snotty last week, feeling a bit better today so hopefully able to have a look this pm, especially as dickiebig kindly sent me a CDI to test, if that aint the issue i have a few other bits on the way

Right Chris, i've dragged me poorly carcass offa the couch just for you.........and i'm bloody mystified now  :unsure2:  :dunno:  :isurrender:

I've now replaced the CDI with a working replacement from dickie's bike and he's shoved his spare on his own bike so we know the CDI is good and working........ me bike will turn over but wont START !! so that suggests no spark, right.....i then put my CDI back on only for the bike to struggle and eventually start with choke, popping, farting blah blah, retried db's CDI and turning over but will not START.......WTF is going on.

So i need someone smarter than me who can put that problem into some kind of context i'll understand, "it's fooked" wont cut it either  :P

It may suggest my CDI is buggered possibly !!!! on the off chance i've boogered the replacement CDI (doubtful) let it be publicly known i'll stand the replacement, if db is kind enough to loan me his and that turns out to be the case only right i do so..In fact i've spoken to db on the phone and i reckon he's a stand up chap  :good:

Dont know what to think at this point really, i'm wondering dodgy pick up coil regardless of the previous ohm reading, ignition switch possibly but have tested (maybe wrongly....is wrongly a word)

Who's got a spare switch knockin about and/or pick up coil  :D please oh please...

Very strange indeed.  No idea why that's happening unless the CDI plug has an intermittent fault.  I can only suggest you let someone try your CDI on their bike if all else fails.

Have you checked for a spark on both the actual plugs you've got in the bike using the actual ht leads and caps ?

Presume you mean with the spare CDI which turns over but wont fire, no i did'nt cos still feel a bit shoite with man flu.... it's bloody weird innit, need Lee or Fixit to maybe throw some light on the subject......all i can do at this point is replace stuff and see if i get a result... i'll pull my CDI next i'm out and post it off to ya if you fancy trying it ?
