On trying this mod in my usual slapdash way, I've managed to lose one to the grommet nuts that the screen bolts into. Any ideas where I can a few for spares?

I noticed today that Halfords do these as well in small packs.

You think our experiments are ever going to work?

Unless the screen is high enough, or wrapped round far enough to the turbulance happened PAST your body?

I guess, with any screen on we're going t o be pushing air out of the way, and there will always be the pressure difference behind the screen?

Did anyone experiment with the cutting holes/slots in the screen that was talked about a few months back?

That next on the agenda, just debating whether it be holes or a slot drilled/cut in my extended touring screen...opinions please!

Done: Homo sap navigation/ twisty thing on bars to make it go vroom/ grabby thing to make it stop (in front of twisty thing)/ 'leccy things front and rear to make it glow at night/ Sucky + drippy oiler thing to keep chains moist (!!) / Laser Pro Stock Race pipes / bleeding ear drums (see previous mod)
To do: Educate homo sap nav system to operate twisty + grabby things/ get ear plugs

I bought a packet today and t's true they are a bit small, fitting a tad loose. I had to buy them though as i'm off on tuesday to France, so i'll just pack it out slightly with gaffer tape.

Ok...

Let's pick up this thread again, folks.
I did an experiment... just like one here suggested:
I put washers beetween the fairing and the screen (I used rubber washers...), bought some bolts/screws in real metal (same grey colour as those used by Yamaha to keep the fairing in place...) and raised the screen from the fairing to let air come through between the screen and the fairing - take a look at the pictures below.

The gap is not a big as this: .
8 mm was it?

Mine is not more than tops 2-3 mm all around.
But it helped! The airflow is a lot smoother and no buffeting/turbulence other than what comes from other traffic.

I really believe that this is a solution that works! Try it and check it out for yourself.

Later on I'll try to increase the air gap to tops 5 mm and check out if things gets better or worse...

I made the mod last week. I used some small rubber grommets as spacers, and they gave about a 3mm gap. Nice easy mod. It's the first time I've taken the screen off, and I found one of the plastic screen bolts had been snapped and the head just glued to the screen ranting.gif Fortunately I had a 'near enough' replacement good.gif

Seems a lot better. Excellent idea. Thanks! yahoo.gif

am defo gonna try this "air gap". good job AJ

was first thinking of cutting down the screen to get a clean airflow instead of the current turbulent one which is hitting me right on the head. since i noticed that if i sat up straight, stretching myself a bit, the noise was far less annoying, more continuous. when sat up normally behind the screen it gives a resonating, hammering type of noise.

any udder MKII owners tried to fit the TDM 900 Winglet (the ones Landy got fer us) to the (short) standard MKII screen ?? i did it today and twas a feckin' fiddly job to get more or less right. when finished i wasn't completely satisified as the Vario mounting feet do not offer up "too parallel" with the screen and i had to tighten up the 4 small vario screws to pull it back into contact, i may try and rectify this at a later stage. i do have 2 other different screens i can experiment on too, but fer the moment i'll leave well enuf alone and try this setup.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. Tried the "standoff" mod yesterday, but gave up for fear of cracking the (very expensive!) top fairing panel. I hadn't thought about it, but because the screen and its mounting surface are curved, to create a gap of even 3 mm offsets the screws considerably from the rubber/brass barrel nuts, meaning I'd have to flatten the screen quite a way to realign them, and stress the mountings as a result. Have those of you who've made the mod just ignored this?? unsure.gif

I just ignored it

I found that the rubber grommets gave the flexibility needed.

With longer screws, at one point I had the screen, 6mm off !!!!!

Think I will bite the bullet and drill some holes like Celtic biker ........ blink.gif

Put my money where my mouth is........

or where my £45 skidmarx screen is........ unsure.gif

I'll come back with what happens.

Fixed the screen flat as normal........

Unless I am mistaken, this type of solution is already standard on the 850 MK II:

It's a small opening but apparently effective enough to get a turbulence free air-flow yahoo.gif
