a little biological interlude:

what you always wanted to know about aardvarks but were afraid to ask wink.gif

my favourite passages are:

"In soft earth, an aardvark can dig faster than several humans using shovels. Aardvarks are nocturnal and sleep during the day curled in a tight circle in the burrow. They are solitary and may be territorial"

and:

"Within its territory, an aardvark uses the same network of paths over an interval of about a week. While foraging, aardvarks cover a strip of ground about 30 m wide in a zig-zag path with the ears directed forward and the snout close to the ground, emitting snuffling sounds while searching for prey."

next installment will be the pigs, ahem, pics of the new seat on "ye olde xt"

hello fans of bike-porn and tps....

preface

this being all hallows eve, i created a horror trip, called "the fog", but first i'll show the promised pictures of the new seat in the xt

the seat has gained about 6cm in height and a couple cm in width. it now looks a little bulky, but comfort is just great. reminds me of the dakar seats on the old xt500, so it's ok then wink.gif

costs were again 90€, made by the craftsman in solingen niklas lange sitzbankservice

i've only ridden it for about 120km, but it has changed "ye olde xt" from a literal pain in the ass to a bike, where i now can use the full range of the 22l acerbis desert tank.

98930km, ruhr valley, germany

today's episode: The Fog. (aaaarghhhh)

i woke up to a great autumn morning, sun shining and autumn leaves glowing in all colors.

ah, what a great day. after breakfast, my girlfriend set off to work and i went out to lube the chain on my "dicke", 5°C, dry, no clouds...hmmmm...

my eyes alternated between these sights:

the desk, with work on the dissertation waiting to be done (and, yes, in case you wonder, it's a big yamaha tdm banner on the wall), and

the dicke, outside, in the sunshine...ready to ride, beckoning me like the sirens did beckon ulysses...."come, take me, mount me, ride me hard..."....ahem, completely wrong line of associations here.... blink.gif

sometimes decisions can be easy, i set off to a ride in the sauerland, want to reconnoitre the location for the german club MT 2008, to upload a few pigs here...

so i follow small roads that become colorfull alleys in the autumn sun:

the road follows a small rivulet that meanders through the landscape and invites the mind to follow peaceful thoughts and meander by itself.

some wooden structures catch the eye and i stop for the obligatory photo:

sometimes the occasional wet leaf lets the rear wheel spin and brings back the mind to the road but all is well...

...or so i thought....

[insert horror b-movie ambient music here]

then it came, right on the hills of the sauerland, The Fog.

visibility went down to under 50 meters sometimes and i struggled to get out of this pea-soup:

the mind is warped by the mist, visions of clint eastwood, pink cadillac appear out of the dense fog:

i just can't see a thing:

after 70km i give up and put my snout out of the visor and find my way home by smell...

Fog can be fun in a "where the feck am I" kind of a way. This one (hardnott pass) was about 10m visability but was technically a cloud rather than fog. Wanted to stop and take a photo while we were in it but couldn't find anywhere flat enough to park the bike so had to settle for a shot back up the road when we got out of it.

aaargh, you celtic barbarians try to invade the sauerland by downloading the evil british fog here....but i'm prepared, when visibility drops to 0, i'll hit the button on my handlebars and a hatch opens and out of the secret compartment comes an arm with a white stick and i can feel my way around...

hello visitors of the muddy pigsty,

XTreme asked here about the reason of the long life of my "dicke". i did not want to hijack the "mileage-thread", so i'll write it up here in my playground.

today's episode. the secret of the long life of the pigs "dicke":

i did nothing special to ensure the functionality and reliability of my MKII.
my first and most important concern is warming up the engine. i ride very careful for the first 20 to 30km, depending on outside tempreature. when the temp gauge is in the normal position, the oil in not warm yet. i wait for the temp gauge to drop a little, when the thermostat opens the big circuit and then wait a little more, to make sure oil and the engine case itself are thoroughly warm.

after the warmup i sometimes redline the engine and have encountered the limiter as well, loving the bike does not keep me from riding the sh*** out of it wink.gif

next item is clutch life: i only accellerate hard, when the cluch is fully out, minimizing slip and friction wear.

it gets its oil changes at prescribed intervals and i check oil level after each ride. (this does not mean i have to fill up every time, i use about 1 to 1,5 liters on 6000km) oil used: castrol 10W40 semi-synth motorcycle oil. expensive, but it seems to work)

after each ride i clean the chain and lube it, takes only a couple of minutes. i use ballistol weapons oil, it does not stick to the chain and thus does not attract dirt. the downside is, sometimes i have to lube in between on longer rides, ok for me.
(note: some tech-experts consider this oil inappropriate for chainlubing, they are right of course. i can live with the flak i get from them and can live with a chain lifespan of about 50,000km as well wink.gif )

i clean the bike, when it is dirty, no pressure cleaner, so i can give it a visual inspection between service intervals.

storing the bike in a self made garage/shed helps as well.

i ride all year, just not on snow or salted roads any more. i had enough of that with my old xtz660...

change brake fluid every two years, clean the calipers about every 8 to 10,000km, depending on dirt conditions.

all servicing i do not have the tools or the competence for, is done by my dealer, he and one of his mechs both had MKI and TRX, so they know the engine. ok, i have to pay, but they work good and fair, and i'm happy to pay a good craftsman for good work.

from memory the incomplete service log and list of modifications:

service:
oil change as prescribed, valves adjusted at 42,000 and 84,000km, next interval, intake valves have to be replaced, the shims are the thinnest available now. camchain will be replaced as well.

emulsion tubes at 80,000km, had to be replaced earlier, but was not possible due to other circumstances, i just lived with the smoke and the fuel consumption for a while wink.gif (the pig smokes as well, so the dicke is entitled a little bit of smoke, ok wink.gif )

disk rotors front were replaced at 72,00km with original disks.

calipers replaced with renovated original calipers at about 80,000km

rear disk and caliper were replaced under warranty after about 9,000km, stuck, perhaps because i never used it. no more probs since then.

fork oil was changed several times, when i felt the fork became too soft.

carb intake rubbers replaced because of age, at about 60,00km or so...

cush-drive? (the rubber thingies in the rear wheel) replaced about three times now.

at 64,000km one wheel bearing in the front had to be replaced.

fouled one set of sparkplugs during a soundcheck when mounting the marvings after the crash in october 2006.

several lightbulbs replaced.

replaced the footpeg-rubbers 3 times. (i've lost count of the times i had to replace the footpeg scratching bolt thingies...cured now by wilbers shock)

horn replaced in 2006.

mods:

replaced the handlebars with an extremely wide and flat magura bar right after the first 1000km/weekend. (destroyed in the crash) magura discontinued this bar, so i use spiegler/ABM 0229 now.

fork springs and rear shock replaced with wilbers at about 80,000km

MKI bash plate mounted, forgot when.

small indicator lights fitted together with the horn, hein gericke, type "arrow"

fitted handguards of the BMW 1100 GS, or was it 1150??? hmmmmm

seat fitted with new foam, for the third time now, the last was in july 2007

the crash destroyed the fairing, the upper fork tubes and one lower fork tube, one mirror, headlight, exhaust, all replaced partly with used parts.

exhaust: now road legal marving 2 in 1 in 2.

k&n air filter and dynojet stage 1.

disabled the white cable (restriction in 2nd and 3rd gear)

tyres tested:

macadam, pilot road 1, bt 020, ME Z6 (currently), in doubt what to mount next.

that sums it up a bit, i hope. but the real key to the long life of my dicke is just my devotion to this piece of machinery.
as my signature says: "people come and go, the "dicke" will stay. wink.gif

Road pilot 2! I'm on a mission to convert everyone. They're fantastic.

General gist of your bike's longevity seems to be a bit of mechanical sympathy (let it warm up) and the proper maintenance schedule. I'm sure mine's not the only bike that doesn't end up getting every bit of maintenance that it should sorry.gif

jepp, this sums it up in a nutshell...i just could not resist writing the mechanical history, cause i did want to post it some time earlier already.

brakesI:
i completely forgot, that i replaced the front brake hoses after 8 and the rear hose after 10 years with lucas steel braided hoses each.
apologies....

brakes II:
the original pads held about 10,000km, brembo pads about the same, sbs were replaced before worn out because of crappy performance, lucas "organic" held about 8000km (front only) current: ebc HH sintered pads, better performance in dry conditions, worse in wet than the lucas.
rear: im on the second set, i think, could be still the first...dunno really. have a set of lucas orcanic in the shed but still enough material on the pads....

tyres. i do not doubt, that the PR2 are fantastic tyres, i'm just afraid that tey do not last long. i have to replace the Z6 (complete set) after about 6000km. the PR2 seems to have a softer mixture, i wore out the PR1 after 5000km (rear only, 1 front for 2 rear), so i'd like a tyre that provides more mileage.

thank you, thank you *blushes*

but i must add, that by no means i want to imply that this is either the best or the only way do treat a motorbike. it is just my personal way.
the bike of a friend of the german forum never gets washed, only sees some chain lube "profi dry lube" from time to time and gets an oil change every now and then.
it has over 80,000km on the clock and the valves have never been adjusted AFAIK. it uses loads of oil and rattles like a paint spray can but still runs... blink.gif
most of the long life of the "dicke" i attribute to the bulletproof construction of the bike. my effords might just be of a cosmetical nature.

warming up the engine is the most important thing, i believe. i ruined the 1993 xtz660 engine by opening the throttle too early....
it was completely done after 44,000km only: crankshaft bearings, valve seals, 5th gear sprockets, balancing shaft bearings, piston, cylinder rebored. i had to fill up oil and check petrol then, smoking like a diesel.
it always used 0.25l oil on 1000km, even when new. so i rebuild the engine and sold it with 56,000km.
the next owner never checked oil, so he let it run dry and had to rebuild the new engine once again....
i'm still fond of the tenere, but when nostalgia hits me, i luckily can take "ye olde xt" for a spin and get my dose of good single vibes wink.gif
