follow the installation instructions using the install disc with your unit, then when you have loaded all the maps (three discs) you will get to the unlock map page where you put in the numbers given on the yellow sheet. after you do this your PC will throw up an error notice and ask you to copy it into a mail and send it to Garmin, (dont bother). press OK and then go to the link
http://www.garmin.com/sup port/download_details.jsp ?id=209
on the garmin support page, run the program and follow the instructions.
This link file will unlock your installed maps

its all gone very quiet on the Garmin thread? i thaught there would have been at least a few questions? but no, you must all be very happy with yer sat-navs then.
i used mine for the 2 weeks i was working in Sweden, i dumped the UK and loaded Sweden, its a good job i did, i would have been lost without it fer sure.
somebody asked if Version 8 software is worth the expense........
if you want version 8 you can contact garmin on the web site and they send the disk for free, a fee may be payable to unlock the disk, i cannot believe some idiots are paying upto £30 for the disk without unlock key off ebay........... its free off Garmin!!!!
well if your running version 7 i wouldnt bother for now. you can only load about half the UK (ver. 8) onto the standard 128meg card if you do a full upload with auto-routing, so i have invested in a 256meg data card for mine (£65 of ebay) which i had intended doing anyway.
oh another thing! i bought a new computer recently and didnt spot the "deliberate mistake" it hasnt got an RS232 serial port interface (your sat-nav connects to a 15pin D type) my new puter is ALL usb so had to buy yet another flippin cable!

Also I tend to agree that it is usually safe to skip a version of city navigator. If you're currently on version 7, there's normally no need to upgrade until version 9 is released. And that's also what any serious and honest dealer will tell you.
If I'm informed correctly there's also an option to test the new versions of the city navigator map materials by entering "demo" as unlock code. You should be able to check out the maps in mapsource but you can't load them into your GPS unit. I'm not 100% sure of this but my source is pretty reliable.

actually, any updates released in the first year after you've registered with Garmin are free. So if you buy a GPS unit don't register the maps with Garmin immediately, wait until the next version of the maps are released, register and get your free unlock code. If you're lucky the next update will come within the year and you can get another free update

yeh i know, they have been £65+ quid for ages, i was hanging on till they dropped the price...... of course now i have bought one.......they will drop the price!!
its a "garmin" card by the way not a generic one like for your camera, as far as i know 256 is the biggest capacity your SP3 can cope with, Garmin make a 512meg card but dont list it as suitable for the SP3. the 256 will hold all the UK and Ireland plus a bit of France or wherever as well

New model.
Has a Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery with many hours of power.
Waterproof.
Very fast calculation.
Small enough to fit in a pocket.
Comes with a car mount.
Only $20 for a bicycle mount that fits on the TDM.
Cost $300 (~150 pounds) new from Amazon.com at the time.
Bottom line: any GPS with autorouting at that price is worth it, and you will just regret not getting it sooner.

good choice. The Quest is an excellent piece of kit. However, DO MAKE SURE you get a Quest and not a Quest II!!!
They're just plain shite and a lot slower than the original Quest. Here in Belgium they were taken of the market after the continuing stream of complaints from users.
Consequently they are very easy to get second hand, but even if you get a Quest II free with a chocolat bar you'll be a lot happier without

So did anyone actually buy one of these peices of kit ?.....
if so, what do you think of it?

HISTORY
I bought the Street Pilot III without a bike mounting kit and had to come up with something else. My unit had two mounting kits supplied with it. One was the bean bag mounting for the car, the other was a more permenant car mounting kit, consisting of a base plate that is stuck onto the facia, into which the garmin sat nav holder cradle clicks into place.
METHOD
I took the permenant car mount base, and found a bicycle lock frame mount. (this was bought from Halfords a while back - it consists of clamp to go around the down tube of bicycle, and a second peice that attaches to the lock, and can be clicked in and out of the holder. You need to find something similar (the whole lock and holder cost <£10)
I used just the frame mounted bit, and removed the bit that holds the lock. I disassembled the Garmin base (4 screws at the bottom), to leave just the very flat base part. I drilled and countersunk two holes in this, to match the bolt holes in the lock holder. I found a couple of countersunk set-screws and bolted the garmin base to the lock holder clamp.
Reassemble the Garmin base with the lock base attached. Then bolt to the TDM handlebars. I had to add some addtional packing in the clamp, as the diameter of a bike frame, and TDM bars is different (the lock came with packing peices anyway specifically for attaching to thinner race bike type frame tubes).
And Bob, as they say, is your uncle!

Unit is powered from my DIN socket which is situated in the rad vent slot in the LH fairing - the cable can be run up the inside and through the cable holder on the yoke. Spare cable can be stuffed in the inside of the fairing near the ECU
