laugh.gif Good point for some reason I hadn't even considered the pub. unsure.gif

Yeah there are alot of extra probs and potential complications created by using the boike but applaud the idea. Like the fact you would prolly notice if the boike nicked and it keeps yer saddle dry....sadly the solutions to these (lock and plastic bag) were already invented.

The Gelert Solo is not far off a bivi really but with a wee bit of storeage room for shoes and tings. The new edition of the Gelert Solo comes in a way less practical bag, rather than the ace zip bag mine has, you have to try and cram the stuff in from the end and the bag does not fully seal. It has one handle huh.gif but it is 5 cm taller. smile.gif Have thought about a Bivi Chris but cramp after a hard days treader is bad enough in a tent but tis certainly worth a thunk about.

The next thing is the rear derailleur. Am hoping to repair the orig derailleur but think the bush that is nacked is plastic and press fit, tis a Shimano Deore LX (model no: RD-M737). All the info I can find says its 8 speed but my boike is a 7 speed, neither 7 or 8 speed seem very easy to find nowadays. Does anyone know of something that would be a suitable replacement for this? I need it to be robust and reliable, being aluminium or light are not of great concern.

what shifters do you use - are they friction type or indexed (clicky clicky)? Bar mount or down tube?

Derailleur type may not be critical. You prolly want a long-cage type for the broad spread of gears

Ooooh exploded view ace stu. Think my worn bit is part of the "Bracket Axle Assembly".

They is bar mounted "Shimano Deore LX Rapidfire Plus" and clicky clicky type. Have the brake lever incorporated into the shifter as one unit. Actually one side isn't "Shimano Deore LX Rapidfire Plus" as it broke and had to buy what I could get hold of.

Think if I have to replace it will be new so I know what oim gettin but mayhaps thats unrealistic. Yer ebay linky dinks are for 9 and 8 speed.

Hi Mr Badger,

I've got an old Shimano Deore XT rear mech (RD-M739) you can have for P+P money. Its old but was hardly used and still in v-good condition, been sat in my garage for the last 10 years.

Same as this one on Ebay

New Rack: Was using a rack borrowed from R'kid, it was a bit flimsy and not mine, so oi bought a Blackburn EX-2. Loike dis: http://www.planet-x-...ar_pannier_rack have heard good reports form the touring sites but can't say the single sided welding looks very impressive. Comes with lifetime guarantee so we will see how it goes, especially with a high proportion of offroad.

i have this very rack on my bicycle, toured with quite a weight of tatt in the panniers and extra stuff bungied on top of the rack, done some mild off road tracks and not yet had a problem, i too was concerned as to the single sided welds but so far so good. Very solid feel to it.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

Yer ebay linky dinks are for 9 and 8 speed.

Yebbut, I think the clicky clicky bit on the bars does the selection, the rear mech will have the same range of movement, Not sure if the chain width is significant, but using a mech for more gears will if anything have thinner jockey wheels, so should fit a 7 speed chain (rather than the other way round where a wider jockey wheel than the chain could be a problem)

btw, the second link was for a Shimano LX Deore 7-speed mountain bike rear derailleur

Managed to miss that second linky dink completely. good.gif It has jogged my memory about the hub spacer...think mine was actually 8 speed at least at some point. unsure.gif

From the little I have read elsewhere 7 and 8 speed you can get away with but its better to get specific speed derailleur. The chain length is also critical. Reading about "chain suck" at the moment.......think oid much rather just use a brush smile.gif as mine has done this before and has nearly written off the chain. Would rather that didn't happen.

Dredging my memory of when I've upgraded bikes, Shimano kept the same chain width when they moved to 8 speed from 7, meaning that you had to have new wheel/derailleur/shifters to have the new gearing (but same chain), the rear wheel needed more dishing to fit in the wider gear block which made it a bit weaker than the old 7 speed one. When they went to 9 speed they kept the dishing on the wheel the same and made the chain narrower (new derailleur/shifters/chain keep the old wheel). You can run an 8 speed derailleur on a 7 speed block but not the other way round, it works fine, you just need to adjust the end travel screws a bit further in/out. There should be plenty of adjustment, I've locked a derailleur to a single gear using the adjustment screws when I've been out and had a cable snap.

My current road hack bike has an 8 speed cassette, 9 speed chain (fixed twice with spare links), 9 speed rear derailleur and 7 speed front derailleur run by friction bar end shifters! Friction shifters never go wrong and will run any combination of bits, Rapidfires are a bit more picky!

I've never believed that chain length is as critical as people make out. The length of chain that's not in contact with gears changes all the time depending on what gear you're in! I've always set mine so that when in the biggest cog at front and back, the derailleur isn't stretched too straight.

Chain suck's a weird one too, I've only ever experienced it on one bike and the only thing that solved it was changing the bottom bracket shell width so that the chain had a better line through most of the gear range. If you have a problem there's always chain suck plates, cheap and easy.
We're all going to die, so let's be nice.

the chain links i mentioned http://www.wiggle.co...ed-chain-links/ i am guessing you will most likely need 7.3mm for your 7 / 8 speed chain

you might need a chain splitter , when mine broke, even if i had one of these links i would still have needed a splitter

rotflmmfao.gif puts laptop to one side, throws back le duvet and strolls into the spare room, hoiks doon the large wicker basket containing the bicycle kit, now the panniers are made by 'Karrimor' and the model is 'Iberian 50', they come with a handy water proof shower cap that you can put on them if need be, but i'd prefer waterproof'ish panniers without the need to faff about with an additional cover. I loike these panniers, cud ya no fit the Givi/Kappa E21's ya have on the 3VD excl.gif

Ahh Karrimor out of bidness now apparently. Nearly bought a used set on the bay as they looked simple and not too jazzy/sparkly. Got some Carradice wans now and they look good enough. They do now make hardercase treader cases. Me 21's would be a tad heavy...specially by the time the Givi wac were fitted.

Me correct sized ahead adapter and tings arrived today, all now fitted along with the bendy bars and clever 90deg front brake doohickabob. DE-LIGHTED with how it all went together. Now much more upright riding position (though not test ridden....due to the biggest hail storm I have ever seen!!!!!). Also removed all of the crap from the bars. Only the quacker and RAM mount remain. Toolkit relocated to under the seat and new seat bag big enough to house tube and levers installed under the seat too!

Some riding needs to happen now afore the next bout of alterations to drive system.
