Incredible that using all Garmin Software it is NOT POSSIBLE to create a route on the PC and then make the GPS follow that exact route. blink.gif I find that bizarre in the extreme. They have decided not to reply to my email about it but Googling told me all I needed to know, along with a huge number of similarly baffled individuals and Garmin saying they are thinking of rectumfrying this slight glitch.....dated 2010. laugh.gif

Luckily the clever peeps who fixed Garmin's via point editing glitch for them also fixed their not able to follow a route made with their own software glitch. In the very same program in fact (see above). It means you can then save as a track, so you lose any direction info but at least you get to use your own route and if you have a decent interweb connection then the direction info can also be saved by eliminating the Garmin software and plotting the route on BikeRouteToaster or similar.

That doesn't sound like a result then ? unsure.gif

Soooooo, is it the Garmin hardware or software that's letting you down/total toilet ? Wondering if you could use a different gps unit.

Sidestand went off greenlaning a few weeks ago, he might know if the man at the front used a sat nav ? dunno.gif Sorry not much help wi' these things.

EDIT: Have ya seen memorymap ? Have a look at the bottom of the page http://www.memory-ma.../adventurergps/

Nah it means some clever peeps have solved a bizarre problem that Garmin have created, so I can use said clever peeps skills/program to work around the problem with some inconvenience and loss of function (i.e. BONGS and pointy arrows.....no great loss really) but retaining a coloured lion showing my PLANNED route....not Garmins wild interpretation of my hours and hours of careful planning.

As Rally said, if you have an "autoroute off" function then all is ok, ....but why you would you create a unit, like mine, meant for biking/hiking/piking without that option...as it then sends you wherever it feels like regardless of the selected route!!!?!?!?!?!?!?....completely bizarre.

Am happy with a coloured lion, thats all I want. But what a hassle to get there.

EDIT: seen yer memorymap linkydink. That may also provide a workaround if routes can be saved as tracks but if it didn't the same problem would exist in that the unit will not allow autoroute to be turned off! Did I mention bizarre already? laugh.gif

Ughhh. Trying to route plan now. Using Mapsource, on the places with alot of junctions, it keeps on trying to plot my route via some bizarre loops, twizzles and basically anything other than just staying on the same road. This is very frustrating.

I could actually cycle the route faster than the route planning!!!! I have tried taking preferences off of cycle and onto car/motorbike. Tried putting preferences onto main roads. Noubt seems to deflect it from these idiotic nonsensical twirls that are neither "shortest" or "quickest". Any help please?

One of the little "tricks" I employ is with the waypoints. Rather than pick an exact reference point, pick your spot, so to speak i.e. just past the juntion in the direction you want to travel at key points. That way you can fool the unit ito navigating down the actual route you want to take. On a long route you can end up with a lot of way points, so it might be better to break it down into coffee and cake stop sized portions and have several routes strored rather than one long one :-)

Think its a slightly larger problemo than that Trev as I am talking about 50metre spaces.....it is trying to force me off the main road and doing bizarre re-routes that instead of continuing 50m down a straight main road it is doing 500metres in a loop and doubling back to the point 50m further on!

None of these points can be waypoints as I need to make everthing a track in the end before they go to GPS as otherwise it again tries to "recalculate" everything and changes the route. laugh.gif Thought I has sussed this but still a way to go methinks.

Setting on 'Avoid Potholes' ?

Looking for Specsavers/Map Shop ?

Settings on 'Avoid Main Carriageways' ?

I may have mentioned this before (did I tell you I repeat myself?) but I didn't have the patience to learn Mapsource /Basecamp for my Garmin but use this instead - Tyre

Even easier is the option to create your route in Googlemaps and import into tyre then save onto your Tom-Tom or Garmin.

I've used it for a couple of European trips now and have learnt to be more careful of placing the waypoints after multiple off - route excursions. My understanding is that the route is just a collection of via or waypoints (are they the same?) and your own Sat Nav will plot the route between how it thinks best and depending on your settings. Is that what you guys have found?

Like most of the technology I own I probably use about 25% of the Sat Nav's capabilities, maybe less!

I thought it were one of those settings. So changed all of them one by one but it made no difference. Its a really weird problem.

Other route planners would be fine I'm sure if you are boatermike/carmadillo doing main roads or are not fussed by route. For Treader I need the cycle tracks and am worried about the fine details of route and the route changing if I plan it on a map other than the one on GPS. Now out of town on route planning and its behaving betterer.

Just emailed Studders a hilarious one. Trying to go over a roundeebout and it complained, so I put in a viapoint 20m after roundeebout..instead of doing 20m in a straight lion, it did a 7.6km loop all the way round the outkirts of the town taking in a motorway before arriving nicely pointing the wrong direction 20metres after the roundeebout. laugh.gif

Thought I'd share the details Daps smile.gif

.....here is me trying to plot GPS round a roundeebout....not goin the wrong way...tis espain. As I try and tell it to go straight over the roundabout. This is its response. The coloured lion with black dots show my route. LHS of pic shows me on the roundeebout. RHS show the suggested route if I place a point 20meters after the roundabout. Have checked Google Earth...its just a normal road through the centre of towm. LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZIO. If I zoom out further the entire suggested detour of 7.6KM going back around the outskirts of town, joining a motorway/dual carriageway and then back to the point 20metres after the roundeebout can be seen.

Think it'd be easier to learn the language and ask fer directions !

I think I can see what your problem is with that one. I assume it's on your euro route? It looks like it might be thinking your still driving on the left as in the UK and not the right as in euro land. The confusion might have occurred during the various map conversions to Garmin format.

This is in Mapsource without doing any file conversion. I can't see an option to select side of road, though I know there is one either in mapsource or on the GPS as I've seen it at some point. It has managed to naviagte a number of other roundeebouts without issue. I think it is probably the map, is that possible? Its one with cycle routes included. Have also noticed some one way streets it will only let you go the right way and others it shows as one way but you can happily hoon down it the wrong way...and just now a roundeebout I could go round to the clockwise!

Having done a bit more routing, I am getting less fussy about the route and just making sure it is pointing in the right direction! I can then pick the roads that look best and use the GPS as more of a guide to direction. Think that is probably the best option for whats left of my sanity. laugh.gif Still enjoying it though during the brief intervals atwix frustrating bits. smile.gif Hopefully ketchup with a Belgie GPS expert at the weekend so might get the pith taken...err I mean some valuable instruction.

It could be on the maps themselves. My Nokia maps switch quite happily between GB and Euro and so does that old thing I posted to you a while back. Do you still have my maps saved on your pc? Might be worth trying some routing on those to see what happens?
