I spent months researching many a bike and seem to constantly return to TDM 900. That was six weeks ago. Now after 5oookms new Perelli Angel GT tyres (bloody good tyre) new rear disc, pads all round K@N air filter and dealt with other maintainance issues. I now have a bike that will idle along in top at 2200rpm will sit on 3500/4000rpm all day, travel the B roads with ease, take to the mountain twisties, slip along dirt roads and gives me the beat, vibration and feel that no multi cylinder buzz machine can offer. I am guilty of testing the bike over this period to find what it can and (and more importantly) can not do. I guess I'm lucky, living in a country area with open roads and mountains at the back door. My nearest red light is 10kms away then the next is 40kms. Am I enjoying the TDM, you bet! I have work to do to get it where I want. The next twelve month will see a bike that will traverse most parts of this big wide scorched land Australia

I think the MT09 is going to be a winner for Yamaha , but to add a fairing and give it a tweak here and there and call it a TDM would be an insult to the years of research that has made the TDM what it is today . I also own a V4 2011 worked Aprilia Tuono , bst wheels titanium exhaust race ecu etc etc Along with a TRX 850 and a SP2 , I can in all honesty say that the TDM is the best road/everyday bike around . It is my main ride and it simply shines .I know , preaching to the converted. But to think that the MT09 will substitute the current TDM is like the naked triumph 900 twin replacing the triumph tiger .
My idea of the new TDM is a 950 shaftie twin with a 2 into 1 exhaust to help keep the weight down , a decent belly pan ,an adjustable upper fairing , manual will be fine , and some good driving lights.
With a 22 ltr tank , that , in my opinion would be he only thing to further improve one of the best thought out bikes in existance. If I wanted a triple I would of got the tiger . There is nought on the market that does it like the TDM .
Well said.

Found on youtube.....have a look at the bike at that appears at 1.44 mins....it's the twin engine, not the new triple, it's a style we recognise, anybody know what it's about???

Both look good.

The new twin 900 engine that surfaced earlier this year had kinked pipes like the ones in the vid.

its a a super tenere engine for sure, but imho its a photoshop. The tenere engine layout is so tall it doesn't allow a forward facing radiator.
Fine concept and I'm sure a 1200 TDM would sell well, as would a 900 tenere !!

With the latest Yamaha plastic forecasted market driven design, the MT07 and the MT09 launches.
http://www.yamaha-mo...s/mt/mt-07.aspx
What if Yamaha don't listen to what riders want and keep producing stylish impractical bikes that no one wants
and they never come up with a better design !
What if the Yamaha TDM 900 is not replaced and it becomes the ultimate practical bike.
Do we all rush out and buy one like Paddy before they are all gone ?

To be fair Ivan, the TDM hasn't exactly been a top earner for Yamaha - the only reason it's sold the numbers it has, is because it's been around so long.
Yearly sales figures weren't impressive - especially in the UK.
so why would Yamaha want to repeat that with another model ? Not seen the MT-07, but the MT-09 is quite impressive IMO - and is aimed at taking sales from the very successful Triumph Street Triple
And the 'ultimate practical bike' could be any one of a dozen different 'adventure' bikes already on the market

FJR 1300 = outstanding sport touring bike. Never ridden one myself, but they sure are popular here and owners seem to love 'em.
Bloody brilliant bike, I miss my TDM900, but the FJR1300 that replace it has proved outstanding in every respect
The only "downside" is the weight of the thing when maneuvering but as soon as the wheels turn, the weight disappears
Once you have experienced the acceleration, you will be hooked
Figures copied from a road test on an 03 (like I have)
Motorcycle Consumer News tested an 03 and here are the results for the items you asked:
0 to 60 = 2.97 seconds
0 to 100 = 6.84 seconds
Standing qtr mile = 10.68 seconds at 126.28 mph
Does not list a time for 60 to 100.
Thats quicker that an R1

I think Yamaha intended to replace the TDM900 with the XTZ1200 Super Tenere
It's got many on the attributes of the TDM900 + shaft drive
It's a shame it's not more "road" biased, but then I have yet to ride one
He who dies with the most toys wins

In it's place is a big blue FJR1300
