Or........  Get some heavy duty sealed 3-pin plugs and sockets, and cut the 900 alternator wiring now and fit a plug and socket, at about the point where the 850  harness stretches to, and fit a similar plug on the 850 wiring. Then if you need it, it's a straight plug and play job.

Confirmed by Edgis, an 850 alternator and pickup coil are a straight swap. The wiring is about 4 inches too short so you need to swap over the plugs/wire ends from the original alternator. From his measurements it looks like the alternator produces enough power with all lighting loads switched on.

Well done Edgis

Thanks. Don't come here to often. Can confirm the fix lasted few k now .France-Spain- Portugal last spring. ;)

I had a reason to open up the alternator today (to set my timing back to standard) which gave me the opportunity to examine the 850 alternator stator.

This has been run for over 6000 miles in the 9er now, with daylight headlamp always on, i also have a pair of additional LED spotlights permanently on.

It seems to appear identical to when it was fitted. there is some slight darkening in some areas, but I have another 850 stator here which is a much darker brown colour all over which has never been in a 900 so I don't think I have anything to worry about.
