21 is the error code for a missing / short-circuit coolant temperature sensor.

22 is the error code for a missing / short-circuit intake temperature sensor.

When error code is shown, the ECU gives a fail-safe value of 60° / 20° on both sensors.

You should now check the resistance value of sensors at the current temperature.

Update.

I checked the Throttle Position Senor, Intake Air Temp' Sensor, Intake Air Pressure Sensor, Atmospheric Sensor and the Intake Solenoid resistance.

Throttle Position sensor got 780 ohms closed and 4.26 kohms fully open with output voltage being 5.03V which is all within spec'.

Intake Air Temp sensor should be 450 to 550 ohms @20C but I got 2.95kohms so I'm guessing that's kaput : (

Intake Air Pressure sensor should give between 3.75V and 4.25V but actual voltage was 4.95V so not good.

Atmospheric Pressure Sensor should give the same readings as the Air Intake Pressure Sensor but again I got 4.95V.

Intake Solenoid should be between 42 and 48 ohms and I got 43.8ohms.

After I'd done this I rebuilt it an' took it for a spin to check to see if the OnBoardDiagnostics concurred with my findings but no such luck......I got errors 15, 22 and 23, 15 being the throttle position sensor which checked out ok on the meter and when I check it with the OBD it seems to work perfectly, closed being between 15 and 17 ( it got 16 ) and 100 fully open ( it got 100 ). :dunno:

I got the confirmation that the Intake Temp' Sensor was goosed but the other puzzler was the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor. Although the meter reading said the actual voltage was out of spec', it was the same as the Intake Air Pressure meter reading yet the OBD didn't recognize that as faulty  :um:

So how is it that the OBD picks up the Throttle Position Sensor as an issue but when checked with both the meter and the OBD when stationary there appears to be no fault?

Is there any way the Intake Temp' Sensor could be causing the biggest part of my problems

Where did your spec for the intake air temp sensor come from....something between 2k and 4k is normal between 10C and 30C

The bike is '03 and the manual the pic is from is '02 but the supplement for the '03 model in the back of the manual didn't show any discrepancy

I read the same page too !

I have an '03 bike, registered in 04. I bought an additional airbox off ebay to modify one of them for better intake flow, so I have 2 temperature sensors to play with.  Both of them read 2k-4k for temps 30C-10C, or that sort of ballpark

Another group member Frits also measured similar values.

I think yours could be taken to be correct for now

It seems there is a mystery about the IAT sensor !

Workshop manual (all years) says the resistance should be 450 ~ 550 ohms @ 20°C, but some people report it at 2K ~ 4K, which is the figure for the coolant temperature sensor. I suspect the parts to be the same in this case, they are actually the same from the external point of vue.

Parts catalog also report the IAT and the ECT sensors to be different parts, whatever the year of built.

Correct, what matters is that the Diag mode report the right temperature.

.I would stick with what most people measure....the manual would need to be updated after every design change in order to be perfect.... (check for latest rev number, destroy earlier copies , etc)

I just checked the IAT sensor resistance on my 2002 9er : it also shows 2.4K @ 20°C.

The ECT sensor also reads 2.4K @ 20°C.

On Diag mode, both are showing 20, which prove the ECU is getting the resistance value as correct (engine is cold since a few days).

I have strong doubts about the workshop manual !

UPDATE : the TDM900 and the XTZ1200 / YZF-R1 seems to share the same IAT sensor, not the FJR.

The IAT & the ECT sensors also seem to be the same parts on these bikes.

Ok, thanks for the input.... I've packed everything away for tonight so I can't check temp's per diag but if I remember they were both way out : (

Sorry if I missed something but re checking the TPS in diag, open the throttle slowly watching the readings and then back down again. Should get a nice climb and fall respectively. Any stutters or jumps in the numbers would indicate a fault.

Or at least one of them.

Did this very slowly and got no errors but when I did it a little quicker it did appear to falter briefly.

Just checked diag codes 5 and 6 and both were showing 61@17.5C so is that a normal set of reading after the bike's been stood for two days?

Also, while checking the resistance of the TPS, the first few times I opened the throttle it read up to 2kohms then I got OL on the meter up to fully open throttle. I think OL means Open Line, so I tried again after 10 mins and got clean readings all the way up to 2kohms then briefly got OL but then it showed the resistance up to full throttle!! (4.27Kohms).

I repeated this a few more times and every time it dropped out at 2kohms but then picked up and carried on.

Could this be the fault maybe?

You got the temperature figure in Fahrenheit because your dash has mph set. 61°F = 17.5°C.
It also seems your TPS is out of specs and needs replacement.

This may seem a dumb question (not the first either) but when in diag mode on fuel injection relay (d50) should I be able to hear it click as it operates?....the engine light flashes but I can't hear a click?

Just to be shure, where exactly is the FIR situated?...it's not too clear in the workshop manual :unsure2:

Why d'ya say the TPS looks out of spec'?

Check the wiring routing pages.
The relay gives a very small click sound.

Because of the description you gave of the resistance test.

I put her back together today after re checking all connections, relays, sensors etc. an' fired her up one to find she was making a loud knocking noise. I turned it off and restarted it and it'd gone so I jumped on it to take it for a quick spin but as I set off it started again, then stopped, an' then started again so I videoed it but the file's too big to upload......any ideas what it is?

TPS or ECU+fueling or timing.

The clue is in the engines reluctance to pull through on a wide open throttle - very un-TDM and then there is the good behaviour at the bottom and top end of the range to take into account..

As I and others have surmised earlier on and based on your own measurements, you should likely be looking at swapping out your TPS IMO.

My Mk2 couldn't function properly without one - God only knows how a 900s fuel injection system copes.

Perhaps a friendly 900 owner has a spare or you could swap a known working unit in and out to verify that this is an issue that needs attention.

I just need to double check it with another meter to be sure it's not a foible of my meter
