Okay good thought, i just came across this paragraph while searching testing CDI which is what is happening with my bike.

Diagnosing CDI is not that easy since the faulty symptoms which are observable on your CDI box might lead to a different direction. At times a faulty CDI may fail to cause a spark at all. Furthermore, when a CDI box is about to become defective, it will lead to misfires, rough running, and ignition problems as well as stall the motor.

Wasn't this the same problem you were having before you decided to strip the bike down ?  Just bin reading Dappers topic that you revived today about his mk1 not starting.

Dont think so Studs, found a melted reg/rec connector initially and then pulled the loom and changed a bunch of stuff, relays and a couple of connectors replaced the reg/rec for a mosfet unit etc, pretty sure that was a no start situation that was electric related, sidestand switch was part of it, but defowas'nt popping and farting and missing like this now.

Edit.. and that the bike will turn and not start with a different known working cdi might point to the real issue, cant be sure of course..

So you originally had leccy issues and pulled the loom in your stripdown, an old loom was bent and twisted in ways it hadn't been for donkeys years during removal and refitting as they do, suggests there may be internal issues going on that changes with being disturbed (the loom not the rider, although could be both) or possibly settling from vibration while riding (which could also start as a stutter at a certain rpm/vibration range), the loom is getting moved around a bit changing cdi's over hence the no start at all problem.

Does anyone have a spare loom you could lay loosely along side with everything connected to see if the issue lies in there somewhere?

Intermittent leccy issues are one of the worst to track down without full replacement.

Dave i thank thee for your response so early in the morning mucka and i am becoming very disturbed, more than i ever was before   i do like your train of thought.........however that was an old problem and the said loom has been cut up into small little pieces a long time ago, i do have another lying about but may need to terminate some of the wires onnit if i were to swap it over to test.

Is that tested over multi times dabbers? Not just it's running so rough it might/might not start with either?

Was the loan cdi in the proper position or hanging loosely beside it? Back to the loom/plug integrity again.

With my CDI in situ the bike has always started with difficulty and ongoing issue of backfiring infinitum, the loan CDI turns bike over on the starter but will not fire up ie no spark it would appear, swapped out twice and a repeat of this problem, my CDI will always have the bike starting albeit with difficulty..

Not hanging loose, fixed securely on the bike, strange one, if i were to swap them out again i'm quite sure the story will be the same, maybe my CDI is on it's way out and masking an issue bypassing as such ??

i had similar issues when i was tinkering with my CDI unit - got  used one of a running bike but similar issues to you  - ended up biting bullet and getting new Ignitech one and had no problems since

Hi Muir, aye matey but the loaner is defo known good, i am thinking my CDI has gotten damaged somehow or is just on it's last legs at 30 years, new is not cheap now, may be a chap in NL who refubs units !! for reasonable money but i will need to get in contact once i know more..

replaced the reg/rec for a mosfet unit out of curiosity, or me just being nosey, what unit did you use?

This is the type of mosfet rec/reg i fitted and a browse through this site gives a lot of info also.

The mosfet unit is wired directly from the battery with an inline fuse but a few points to note, if buying from the likes of ebay you will need to purchase the connectors extra and they are sided, be extremely careful as some shoite cheapo's around (goes for rec/reg as well) mine was a used item in good nick for around £70 when bought.

Finding a place to fit is a bit frustrating and i've currently settled for under the seat for now, some mk1's have a rec/reg fitting on the left side of the bike as well as/or the right side, wont fit on the right as it's a wopper but could on the left..

P.S the cheapo connectors have a habit of dislodging from the unit, happened on mine..
