Ducati Multistrada
I think the most important point about this bike is the impact it may have on second hand multistradas. With owners upgrading to the 1200, there could be some good deals on 1100 multis - and they look a cracking bike with slightly more reasonable service intervals.
Looking at the (bewildering) range of the 1200's "mode settings" to suit "your type of riding" reminds me of the TDM system which is:
1. bends ahead mode - move forward, 2 inches toward tank to get weight on the front
2. motorway mode - sing loudly to keep awake
3. town mode - assume everyone personally hates you and is trying to kill you
I think we should put a little sign on the bars to show this "patented TDM mode switch" system

What do you think a bike-journo will do under the threat that his competition will get all teh scoops and he'll be left working with rumours or re-chewing what his colleagues have written the month before?
I suspect that he will get a job with MCN then he can invent whatever lies and bullsh1t that spring to mind

The Ducati Multistrada, god I can't believe I'm actually going to say this...... I like it and I may even book a test ride on it! Just for fun of course as I've just bought a TDM 900!
If Yamaha shoehorn the 1200 engine in the TDM, without adding much weight I think it'd be a nice bike, especially at £8599 or summat close.

The 1st edition of the Strada isn't cheap either but at least it's exciting and more daring / extreme. Who on earth will pay 13.5k for an overweight mainstream product with surprisingly moderate specs, barely any exotic details (apart from some electronic gizmos perhaps) and the name "Yamaha" on the tank?
Tip of the week: For poor people on a tight budget there is still the BMW GS for only 11k. Bargain!

I dont think I would ever buy a brand new bike or car for that matter. (could be cos I'm a stingy git)
The car I have now when new was £23000. I bought it 4 years down the line still in very good condition for £5700.

I thought exactly the same thing. What are they thinking??
If I had a spare £13.5K I'd be buying a replacement family estate car and another used bike.
A bit like that Davidoff 'Jus d'Ewan McGregor' smelly stuff.

Could we see a pared down Tenere and find a TDM? Simplify the XT1200Z Tenere and reduce the cost from the current £13,500 completely full spec.
Cost reduction guesses: May be capacity to 960cc (£1500); Chain drive (£400); No-spoke wheels (£250); 18" front wheel (£100). That then makes it £11,250.
Then take all these features off and put them onto the accessories list (more guesses): Braking/traction control ABS (£850); Electronic Sport/Tour switch (£850); Heated grips/hand guards (£200); Luggage (£250); Bash plate (£400); Headlight plate (£100). That's a further £2,650 less.
This makes a final 'basic' price of £8,600 for a 'TD960Z'. Would that be an acceptable updated TDM-type bike with a healthy accessories list? Something more basic is coming from Yamaha in 2011.

When it fails to shift, because the whole mystique schtick didnt work, they're have to do some kind of budget version to try to claw back costs.

Wait to see the super tenere on the roads and then we will decide if it is worth it.
Of course mommy Yamaha says that the first edition will be special and after that the cost will drop.
I will just wait and see. (Although I do not intend to change my bike)

The finishes seem like careless Chinese replikas and the bike itself does not feel completed. However, every control and the body position looks to be just inplace when you sit on it. Apart from the price, TENERE is a bike to be tried to me.
You better decide yourself:
