Had my first decent run out on my new to me '09 TDM today accompanied by a Multistrada 1000 & BMW R1100GS.

First impressions

TDM is slower than the 'Strada & GS, half expected the Ducati to pull away but didn't expect the GS to go past as I'm red lining the TDM 'thru the gears rolleyes.gif

Snatchy below 3k then smooth all the way to red line, linear power delivery which while nice in todays slippy conditions could be a bit boring on a nice summers day.

Gearbox ...when cold a nastly clunk when engaging 1st ...bit of clutch drag when trying to find neutral... fine once warmed up.Top gear an overdrive, will be good for motorway work but a pain having to change down for overtakes...expected better top gear roll on from 60ish.

Seat comfy, plenty of leg room, handlebar position fine. Mirrors don't give much of a rear view, screen not high enough.

Brakes strong with loads of feel, not outstanding though....I won't be trying to outbrake a GS.

Suspension coped well enough with all types of road surface but mid corner bumps kicked me out of the seat a few times, slow to change direction & tendency to understeer. I've not checked/changed settings so maybe scope to improve.

Standard Dunlop tyres...if I could buy nothing else I would give up biking excl.gif

For me the TDM is like a big Versys...not perfect at anything but good enough at everything that you overlook it's foibles & enjoy it for what it is.

Nothing that hasn't been done before

Luggage & high screen added, BMW h/guards, oxford heated grips, pryamid fender extender & 17" front wheel ready to be fitted.

In my experience a 900 TDM will outrun an 1100GS by a whisker, having about the same power but being a bit lighter and easier revving. It's a close call though, esp since the boxer pulls stronger at low revs. The 1200 boxer is clearly stronger though.

I don't quite see why the TDM gets compared to a GS anyway: There is absolutely nothing on a TDM 900 that sets it apart as an adventure bike. OK, it's got an 18" front wheel, around 140 mm suspension travel, modest 160 rear tyre size and fairly wide handlebars but a Pan European has all those characteristics as well and those are rarely seen off-road (not intentional anyway) rolleyes.gif

Not sure how I missed this thread until now, but here's my comparison, having 10k+ miles on the GSA now.

Overall rating: GSA hands down [not accounting cost issues].

Twisties: prefer the TDM, feels smaller, has more sport-oriented tires, 'race' suspension setup [stock was mushy IMO]. GSA does remarkably well once you work up the guts to lean it over, but just scarier to toss around.

Touring: GSA by a mile, comfier, more spacious, less vibration, more electrics, better weather protection all around, more raw power.

Daily driver: TDM for sure, more economical, smaller and hence easier.

Acceleration: Pretty sure the GSA beats it, feels quicker to me anyway.

Braking: GSA by a mile, so much so that when I get back on the TDM I can't believe how crappy the brakes are (yes, I have the blue dots).

Gearing: GSA, smoother, 6 speeds, low "enduro" first gear which I like.

Cost: TDM by a mile, in virtually every aspect.

Fairness of comparison: zero, TDM is 1992 850 that cost about 1/3 the GSA which is a 2010. Both bikes are by my mind fully sorted. I've ridden them both as daily drivers, wkend trips, month-long trips.

Can you give some more details regarding the:
1. BMW h/guards - what model BMW and where to order. Any problems assembling?
2. 17" front wheel - from what bike? Any changes to be made in chain or sprockets or front fork?

My R80 GS only makes 55bhp but it is very nimble & the handling is excellent - and it doesn't struggle too much keeping up with the TDM's tongue.gif

Well, I haven't had the pleasure of riding any other TDM. The fact that I still love riding it when I have two primo BMWs in the garage says a lot if you ask me. good.gif

Don't recall the magazine, but at the time I bought the TDM (new in 1992) I read an article doing head-to-head comparison with (I think?) the R100R (1000CC standard, not the R100GS). They rated the TDM as a superior bike based on new engineering, sportier feel, and a few other factors I don't recall. It's all somewhat subjective - I have cousins who frickin swear by those old airhead beemers. I might even have that article on file somewhere - if it every surfaces I'll scan and post it here.

Just remember that you have to drill & tap the bar end weights to fit the GS1150 handguards - quite easy & well worth it though good.gif
