Ahh, maybe he hasn't got that one - it's a 2012 990 he's got and certainly didn't pay 14 grand for it - he's a tighter arse than me!

Good news.
Like the premium bond idea too.
I like that idea too, what a brilliant way to prove to the missus that you'd actually saved the money! I may just do something like that myself

Exciting news then. A Tenere based on the MT07, if they can get the fuelling right and make it comparably economical, will compete nicely with the BMW F800GS, but have Yamaha reliability. Oh boy, I look forward to that.A quote from another forum, in case of interest in the rumour mill:
"At Eicma we were told that on the Mt07 base will be developed a new Tenere' and on the Mt09 base a new Super Tenere' but not before June -July........ A new TDM is coming but only rumors..as well as a new R3 on Mt09 base....."

Talking to the excellent chaps at Skellerns in Worcester, today, they have high hopes of a new TDM based on either the MT-09 or an enlarged version of the new MT-07, there may even be something at the NEC.

If I was going to replace the TDM with something else I would probably lean towards the BMW 1100 or 1200 R .............or an early 1000 GS.
But it wouldn't be as comuter friendly as the TDM . I mentioned a shaftie 950 .The down fall of the shaft drive is the inability to alter the gearing . I've taken one tooth off the front sprocket and one extra on the rear to make the bike cruise at lower revs , but I do miss the extra drive it used to have .Does any one remember the early mitsubishi Colts with the power / economy lever . I wonder if there's a chance Yamaha could slip something like that into the gear box or shaft drive unit ?. It would be a first for bikes wouldn't it ? I reckon it would be a game changer . Cruising along at low revs . The mountains arrive . Flip a little mechanical lever and wala , you've regeared the bike to suit the corners ! This changing the power through fueling doesn't appeal to me . I dont use it on the Aprilia . And another ........Why not put little spot lights in the rear view mirrors rather than the indicators ? These new lights are as light as a sparrows fart these days , and the thought of have the lights turning with the bars has to be a bonus . It's not unfeasable . And it would be another first .
Maybe someone should start a new thread on OUR new TDM wanna be , and banter some ideas about . I know one thing though . My next main bike is going to be a shaftie . I'm sick do death of cleaning chains . And the only 950cc shaft is the guzzi Bellagio . I like what Yamaha are doing at the mo ,but the 700 or the 850 MT's won't cut it as the new TDM by adding a larger tank and a fairing . And it cant be a tenere either as it will lose its commuter appeal .

Just been up to Motorcycle Live and tried for size (in no particular order) MT07 and MT09 (knees too high up - not comfortable), KTM Adventure 1190, VStrom 1000, too bulky for me (GS and Triumph GS ;-) ruled out for same reason) Super ten not as bad as the others for bulk but I still like the ergonomics of the TDM (apart from the bars) better.
The only adventure styled bike that was comfortable was the CCM 450 Adventure & that was pretty good - If I was going to do serious off road I think Id be inclined to go for something like that even over the 660
So the good news is I dont feel any desire to trade my TDM for at least another year :-)
I DID rather enjoy sitting on the Norton 961 but wasnt impressed with some of the finish (hoping it was not a customer bike)
Must sort the bars and Levers for next season though

I think you have to take into account that it is in the salesman's interest to tell you a new TDM is not coming out for 3 years - he would rather you bought a much more expensive FJR1300. What he says doesn't sound logical because Yamaha just brought out the MT09 and the XV950 without waiting for a favourable exchange rate.
Anyway if they had a new TDM, Yamaha wouldn't keep it under wraps for 3 years they would want to re-coup their investment as soon as possible.
I expect that new variations of the MT09 will come out fairly soon - Yamaha will want to use their new engine to get a slice of the mid size "adventure" bike market currently dominated by BMW and Triumph.
Hang on to your TDM, save your money and I bet you don't have to wait long to replace it with the new one.

With the missus feeling one degree under (or is it me?), I am keeping out of the way and have wasted some time on this in MS Paint. Hmm. The new Yamaha Star 950. Not a ‘TDM’ - there could only ever be two TDMs (or is it three?). I have been helped by the designer of the MT-07 - just to update the old 900. Thing is, you have a choice of engines: twin or triple, and fuelling is perfect (you would not believe it!). And it’s a shaftie. With the front light brightness you can see for miles. Well over 200 mile tank range, with easily 65 mpg (more for the twin); the new screen is larger and there’s no buffeting whatsoever. Fabulously comfortable triangular seat with suspension height easily adjustable between 795mm and 835mm seat heights. The shock? Quality item. (RWU forks). The bars are also adjustable - for reach and height for maximum comfort (supplied risers/backers bits). Mirrors are further out too. It only weighs 199kg wet (twin). The cost to you is £5,990 for the twin, and £6,990 for the triple. It is a perfectly formed basic bike to the extent that extras will include all the electronics you could shake a stick at (including self-levelling suspension). Yeah, right. Ooops, she’s acoming... Anyway, should it be in Comedy Central?

Looks / sounds good to me!! Updating the TDM presents Yamaha with a golden opportunity, but IMHO they need to stay true to the original concept.

Had a look at the new 1000cc V-strom yesterday at my local Suzuki/Kawasaki dealer. The only ones they had in were pre-ordered ones (some people must be very susceptible to marketing hype) but they let me have a nose around. The front looks soooo like a GS. The only thing that I was really taken with? - the front mudguard is long enough to maybe actually guard against mud being slung all over the bike. By the way a fully loaded Versys 1000 (yuk) is £1000 cheaper than the basic Strom.
