Any good tips  for us here in the U.S. about where to buy goodies like crash bars, side cases, and parts is welcome! I'm sure it's been covered 100 times before, so just link up any topic's off the top of your head and it will be a great start for me to jump from.

Mostly the little things, trying to gather up my farkles right now. I have the rear rack on order, l need the bash bars, and I am in desparate need of an adjustable brake lever (I have short fingers). Better front brakes would be fantastic, I bled them and got all of the last 20 years of crap out of there but they are still a little softer than I like....probably needs new brake lines so that will be next. I have a good connection at the local Yamaha Store.

The mirrors are missing, I am using bar-end mirrors for now.

My other bike is a 2005 FJR1300, I also had a 2005 DR650 that I traded for the TDM.

The brake lever is adjustable, I think there are 4 settings.  Clutch lever isn't adjustable though.

I would deffo try new brake lines and some new fork oil before ya go buying other calipers.

Ah, here it is!

Shouldn't this be at the top of page one?

And why did I have to lie about the colour of a bike I don't own to get on here for advice? I'm going to get one, honest....

It's the colour of my last one.

Anyway, I was on here about 9 years ago with my two 850's.

Had to sell the last one when I fell for an R1100rs.

Couldn't afford both :-(.

Stayed with that for 7 years, and as money got tight I swapped it for an F650gs, to get the 75mpg.

I commute all year round, and it saves me £25 a month. Bit of a challenge to keep up with my mates on the motorway though (1200gs adventures)

Now a year on, endowment policy finishes next month, and I'm looking around again.

I'm still a fan of the TDM. I've found out I can get a lowering kit very cheaply, which is a big plus with my 29" inside leg, but don't know which to get. :dunno:

It seems the 900 with injection, and a host of other improvements is the one to go for.

Any comments?

Stands back with hands over ears...

I'm Bill from Nottingham, by the way. 59 and still going strong.

Hi Bill.........hmm 850 v 900,  i love them all and wish i could afford a mk1 as well as my 900.. for me 900 is much easier in terms of maintenance, needs very little,, find it is also a little more planted on the big trips down the m/way... 900 with the fuel injection can be a little snatchy at low revs but almost  everybody sorts that out one way or another.. haha good luck i dont know what to tell you really, get a ride on them all again !! think we have a couple of members with a short inside leg on 9rs as well so cant see that being an issue.. 59 and still going huh,, your still a young bull by todays standards

Oh get the 900 then  ;)

It's easier to lower the ride height of a 9'er than an 8fiddly.

Welcome. You're a youngster. You will find some info on lowering the bike if you do a search on here. Many have done it.

Greetings, my name is Stumpy. I live in Hemel Hempstead and have just bought an X reg 850 off my mate. Always wanted one and after selling my Vespa earlier in the year I couldn't get rid of the itch for 2 wheels.  The bike is currently silver but a trip to Halfords for a few cans of matt black spray will soon sort that. The only major issue I have is the speedo doesn't work. Everything else on the dash is fine, I looked in the Haynes manual but it seemed a bit vague, any ideas?  Hope to see you about on the road sometime soon, ride safe.

Hi Stumpy! Your speedo problem - how's your cable doing? Have you disconnected the cable at the drive end and spun the cable with your fingers? If the cable is ok the speedo needle should flick. If it does, but does not work on the road, check the drive itself, or, more likely, the speedo clutch, located in the front wheel, as it is easy to mis locate the drive when replacing the front wheel if it has been removed for any reason. You should see a flat washer with two tangs that locate into the speedo drive, and it is easy to break these off.

Hello all, I've just bought an '02 900. Ridden back from Bath to west yorkshire. Never ridden a twin before so found it strange at first, but did plenty of overtakes up the Fosseway and found there was plenty of power. I had an fz1 before and found the high revs and power unuseable in day to day riding. TDMs power is very useable and there's plenty of torque for my style of riding. Like the riding position, though the dash seemed miles away. It's fair to say my bike has not been loved, but that's why it was so cheap.

So just to get some essential add ons- engine bars, luggage rack and taller screen and fit my hot grips, and I'm sorted.

Few mechanical issues to sort- indicators flash too quick and suspension is awful... probably badly adjusted and can be certain fork oil has never been changed. The idle speed whe warm is 1500 rpm. Thzt seems quite fast to me. Can anyone tell me what it should be?
