OK, so she's running better than she did the day I got her, with more power and cooler too. There's a bit of a miss on both pots but I'm hoping that's just gunk on the valves an' seats that should burn off with a good run.
On the cam shaft sprockets there were 4 tippex spots that didn't correspond with anything relating to the timing so it would seem that someone has been in there before an' cocked it up maybe by using the firing mark as the TDC mark as per the workshop manual or removing the cam chain tensioner before marking things up.
My guess is that the day the coil went down it jumped another tooth with the extremely hot day (94ºF) plus the lumpy, snatchy running.
StudyThey will run with the timing out. It may be you need the newer, revised Camchain tensioner. Have a look here, in particular post No. 22
Cheers Studders, I'll sort one out tomorrow.
What can I say......without the help from and support off you guys this would have been a much bigger ball ache than it was so THANKYOU to all who offered much needed advice and guidance.....tomorrow is now a playing out day

One more thing, is there a way to tell if the cam chain tensioner is the new design?......I don't want to buy a new one if it's already been done

You should anyway check that ignition timing again...
Just awaiting the arrival of the new cam chain tensioner (£140 !!) an' gasket an' I'lll check the timing after I've fit them....
I did the mod that you suggested to the old one while I'm waiting an' took it for a 60 mile blast yesterday...everything seemed in order although I did notice she was doing a little bit of hunting at very low revs but it did seem to settle down a bit towards the end of the ride so I'm putting it down as dirty valve seats

Finally the new cam chain tensioner arrived I fit it per JBX's instructions
( cheers pal, ur on the bookmarks toolbar
) an' all seems well...when it stops raining I'll take her for a blat and hopefully I can then put an end to this absurdly looooong thread
You should anyway check that ignition timing again...
You know I might just do that...for old times' sake u understand

Finally got to get out for a decent ride and she's now back to the TDM I know and love......plenty grunty, HOWEVER...........
There was still some hunting and missing at low revs (between 11 an' 1200rpm) so I took off the throttle bodies that had quite a bit of kak inside and tonns outside
IMAG0127.jpg 117.91KB
0 downloadsthat looked like there was some sort of gas leak.I noticed the rubbers'd been over tightened slightly causing the clips to twist, that in turn caused the rubbers to pull away slightly from their seats on the barrels.
Took 'em off, cleaned everything, straightened the clips and put it back together but the hunting/missing's still there. At this point I ran the bike and sprayed carb cleaner roughly around the throttle body rubbers and noticed the revs pick up, the hunting stopped an' the missing too.
Presuming this to be a gas leak on the vaccum side of the throttle bodies I went on the hunt with the carb cleaner with a straw nozzle attached but found nothing
Any ideas?......I heard you can get the rubbers back to supple by soaking 'em in a mixture of isopropanol and Wintergreen...thought I might give it a go to see if it helped reseat the rubbers just in case this was the root of the problem.....anyone else tried this?

I've used wintergreen in a pan of boiling water and simmered them for an hour, it softened up the rubber
Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.
