Hi guys, I searched first before posting this to try and see if this has been covered before but I didn't find anything conclusive.

I have a 1992 TDM 850 (US) with just 16,000 miles on it that I have had since the late 90s and am trying to resurrect after letting it sit for ~8 years. It's been at a shop since June and they have rebuilt the carbs, de-varnished the gas tank, and done a number of other important maintenance pieces on it in order to get it back on the road.

One outstanding piece, however, is that it's weeping coolant from the water pump housing, and the shop is recommending replacing the water pump. They claim they can't find a 1992 part/assembly for the water pump, but the 1993 units are available, with a different part number.

Does anyone know if that different part number is due to something trivial - like different paint on the housing - or is there a fundamental difference in the parts between those two years?

Any and all advice appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Tremek, i reckon the difference cud well be the paint finish as the early engines had a darker colour and  later ones were finished in a silver colour.

spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

I loike tay and hang sangwiches !

Thanks for the exact thread title I was looking for Tremek, did the 93 pump work?

If so, I am gonna go ahead and buy a 93 pump too, my seals got phokayed as well due to the petrol in oil sh1t I am dealing with right now.  Can't even find a used one here in Mexico, Damn Yamaha US for only importing the TDM in 91 and 92, I wish there were more examples on this side of the pond.

Good news, I took the existing water pump apart and found a matching seal and bearing at a local bearing supply warehouse.  Both parts for less than 10 USD, put her back together no leaks, all good, saved a ton NOT buying a complete pump.

Very happy, sorted out the other sh1t, rebuild the carbs but she still runs a bit dodgy, lack of power and popping mid range, just gotta adjust the mix.
