Hi guys, having read the topic on web hosting it's pushed me to start looking into getting our own website up and running to promote what we're starting to do over here in Hungary ie renting our house out and arranging individual tours for our guests.
I haven't got a clue when it comes to designing a basic website so can anyone recommend somewhere to start. Cost is a major factor (it has to be cheap!) and I'm not looking for anything too fancy. A basic site with 4 or 5 pages max, nothing necessarily interactive but something that I can easily update if poss.
Thanks,
Paul.

there's basically 2 ways to go:
- use static html pages. This is quick and simple to get online but will require at least a basic knowledge of html to create and update.
- use a Content Managament System like Drupal or Joomla. Most hosting firms offer these in their standard package and allow you to easily set them up through a web interface. They allow you to change, add and update information without knowing anything about html. To get a personalized look (different from themes available online) you will need someone that knows a bit of html/css and preferably some php though.

Or, take out an account with wordpress or blogger/blogspot as they're free. Choose from a number of ready-designed templates, add your own stuff (you just type or paste the copy in) and away you go. You won't have to do much if any maintenance, wordpress and blogger will take care of getting noticed by search engines for you, and you can always add things later in the form of new "blog" entries. Of course you aren't really using the site as a blog, but that doesn't matter. You've still got your information online with minimum hassle and expense.

Going standalone with your own site offers flexibility but can be an awful lot of work and pretty geeky unless you are happy with getting under the engine cover. I've found standalone wordpress to be fairly simple and reliable, as these things go, and there are literally thousands of themes and plugins to choose from. A full-blown CMS like drupal might be overkill for what you have in mind. These are very powerful systems but I've found they need quite a lot of attention and the learning curve can be very steep.

If you want to see what's around, then this site has a lot of information and reviews just about every free solution out there: http://php.opensourcecms.com/

I made a website for my apartment in Croatia using Microsoft Frontpage.

Fairly quick job (2hrs), and I have absolutely no knowledge of HTML. Basically like making a word document (with a bit more fiddly page sequence).
Menu of the different pages are made automagically, and so are picture galleries.

Frontpage keeps a copy of the site locally, so you can work on it, then you just upload it to your isp/host when needed.

I didn't even know i had frontpage until I had a closer look at the office version installed on my PC.

The lovely Mrs TeDeum used Synthasite to make her new site. Updating is easy you do it in realtime online - there is no need for FTP and no need for any understanding of html. If you have a domain they will host your site for free without advertising being stuck on it - I can't understand how this works financially for them. If not, you can buy and register a domain with them for not a lot of dosh.

Look on the back/side... there is often a port to run a 'regular' monitor in the meantime.

Back online as Erika's hard drive went the following day!!!!
My laptop's a Toshiba satellite pro L100. I was quoted nearly Ł500 for one here in Hungary. I tried the cable thingy to use my tv as a screen but it didn't seem to work. They sold me a lead with a video output on 1 end and a scart on the other.

Yep, still lots of tweeking going on. Just loaded some more pics this week as the work progresses.
As for linking to Erika's screen.... I bought a lead to link to tv but that didn't work so took it to pc shop n thy said tha it wasn't set up inside the laptop (?) so without being able to see what was going on it wasn't possible to set it up. Only option was a new screen ohmy.gif(

Thanks for all the info guys, I've now registered a domain and built a web site. Still lots of info/pics to add but it's up and running and I'm working on it each day. Cost so far - Ł10 and a few hours of my time biggrin.gif It's been very easy and I'd recommend Synthasite to anyone with very little i.t. knowledge who wants a web site.

What about using a website builder like hPage? I use it to create websites. Relatively easy to maintain too. hPage is only 4.99 euros a month to maintain and that already includes domain registration, custom emails, and other cool business features. They have hundreds of website design templates as well so you can go online easily.

Check it out here: https://www.hpage.com

Oops, I apologize. I didn't realize this post was from 2009 and has already been solved. I found it while in a deep web of posts and immediately answered since I used to be a web developer. But I leave this here in case anyone else needs help or has the same problem for the current times.
