I have two 850 4tx,wondering if the 900 is an improvement worth going for.Sadly because they are no longer in production a test ride is not available.Opinions from riders who have made the change will be welcome. :)

Really liked my long gone 4tx and really like my current 9er, but for different reasons.

Oh that's such a tough question to answer,  i'm in the same camp as Favs, if it's pocket money to buy one for you then try a 9r otherwise stick with what you have, the 9r wont compare to the mk2 on the twisties unless you make some adjustments or have TT riding abilities, IMO mk2 prolly best at B road blastin, 9r lovely and planted for long jaunts up the motorway..

Wot he said.

It's been quite a while since i moved from a 4tx to a 900, but from what I remember the 900 is slower steering but more refined, and most importantly for me, doesn't burn anywhere near as much oil.

I had a 900 and my son has a 850 4tx. The 850 is nicer to ride and felt faster. The 900 had fueling problems which I couldn't sort to my satisfaction so I never enjoyed riding it and sold it  However the 850 drinks oil whereas the 900 used none and because its newer is going to be more reliable. If your 850 doesn't use oil there is no gain to going for a 900.

Thanks to all for your comments,I,m still undecided perhaps if one comes up at the right price I,ll try it.If I don,t pay too much it will not cause too much pain if I prefer 4tx.

Many thanks.

I might be talking b@ll@cks here but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 850s have even firing strokes (i.e. a 360 degree crank) whereas the 900s have v-twin type firing (i.e. a 270 degree crank).

I've got a 900 and never had an 850, but I find this lazy firing order one of the bike's nicest characteristics.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

I've a 2000 850 4tx and have left sportsbikes for dead on twisty roads, never ridden a 900 either, there are very few bikes right now that I'd swap the 4tx for

That's true for the MkI - what's normally called "parallel twin" as pistons move up&down synchronously).

MkII (4TX) have 270 deg. crank like the 9er.

The grass is always greener........

I've got a 9'er and love it, but if you've got a 4tx and love that just carry some oil around with you.

A couple of points I think are right but happy to be shot down. I think the screen on the 850 gives better cover than a standard 9'er. Also, I believe the 850 has more lower down grunt due to the way the 9'ers injection works. It can be changed but costs money.

The 9'er s 6 shift compared to the 850 5 shift, so as Cliff said the 9'er should be easier on long runs. I've done some suspension mods to my 9'er and it behaves much better on the twisties, but again, adding cost.

This is the only down side of the 900, apparently. The cost of gender relocation surgery. Sorry, someone had to aim for the bottom. :hide:

My thoughts exacary. 850 for scratching and 900 for touring.

ooooh Harvey i do love a good bum errrrr PUN!

I simply prefer the generous leg room the 3VD and 4TX has over the 900,  yer knees are bent back further on the 900 to get yer feet on the foot pegs and this puts me off a bit. 5 speed box is all ya need.

I do genuinely tink the TDM900 is a fantastic boike though and i wonder if i'll eventually buy one?

I found the family jewels got squashed more frequently on the 9'er, shape of the seat prolly.  Also found myself using the gearbox a lot more than the 850 wan, esp. traversing mountain roads.  60,000 miles on the 9'er and only using a tiny amount of oil although a good 850 doesn't use much really.  I'm not a racing god but found all TDM's to be chuckable on the bendy stuff.

Alloy frame and swinger on 9'er means no rust issues, rusty rear suspension bushes means issues if not regularly maintained.  Same for 850 though.

9'er has more sensors and lectrickery stuff so more to go tits up.

All good bikes and I'd have any of 'em. :)

My advice would be to try to cop a ride on a 9'er, they are a bit different than the mk2 8fiddly.

Well my 850 4TX has a 270 degree crank (and a two into one which fattens up that sound).  Firing order was changed for the 8.5 mk 2s, but I know SFA really......

Never had a Mk2 but I went from a Mk1 to a 900.  I agree with the above comments that the 900 is a much better bike for long distance touring, but the 850 was a better B road scratcher, mainly due to the bottom end punch out of low speed corners where the 900 just doesn't feel as easy.  Although as that's an engine characteristic I'm not sure how the Mk2 compares to the Mk1 in that regard due to the aforementioned 360 vs 270 degree firing angle.

Also found myself using the gearbox a lot more than the 850 wan, esp. traversing mountain roads.

Well the 9er has got a lot more gears than your Mk1 :D

I have had both and still have 2 niners. I agree that the 850 was more fun on the B roads but the deciding factor for me would be the oil consumption and the potential bottom end failure on the 850. I checked my oil fastidiously, fitted an oil pressure indicator and carried oil when I was on tour. After 18 months, I suddenly had a bottom end failure and for that reason alone, would never consider an 850. The only 2 failures I have had on my 4 niners were a stator (rewound for £50) and a non-starting issue due to an earthing problem.

That is my tuppence worth.

I've had a 3VD, ridden a 4TX and have a 9er.  The best spec would be a 9er but with a 360 crank, carburettors, 4TX suspension and seat shape from a 3VD.

Oh, and 3VD bodywork.

A pity Yam never made it.

:oldgit: IMHO
