Hi Everyone, thought I'd introduce myself to the group as I've used it's knowledge base in my restoration of my recently purchased 3VD.

I'm not new to TDM's having purchased a MK2 new in 1996 (I waited for the new model delivery at that time) and had 5 happy years of ownership doing 50,000 miles in that time, all pleasure and touring. Can't help wonder what happened to that yellow beast N789 VWN.

Back in August I had extended use of a new Tenere 700 and so thouroughly enjoyed it that it reminding me how much I like Yamaha twins, on a total spur of the moment decision I checked ebay and spotted a 3VD for sale and although I could tell by the pics that it looked a little unloved it had obviously been owned previously by someone who knew their TDM's because it had a few desireable updates fitted. So, picked up the phone and minutes later I was arranging collection!

Upon collecting the bike it came as no real surprise that it wasn't as good as the pictures made out but hey, it's a MK1 and I generally rebuild my bikes as a matter of course so loaded up the van and back to west Wales it came.

Anyway 5 weeks later I'm a very happy TDM rider again after a major service and some personal cosmetic upgrades.

I must say though that the bike came with a file of past history that has passed down the ownership line with very detailed worksheets etc that is a credit to a former owner from some years ago, there are many references to this site within which gives me the impression that said owner is/was a member. I would be very happy to hear any tales or known history of the bike if anyone knows it.

Cheers

Brian

Hi and welcome Brian, yer mk1 looks to be in super clean great condition. :good:

I think you might find them Akrapovics are actually Laser Pro Stock exhausts, which are pretty rare and prolly better imho.

They are indeed Pro-Stock (I had them on my last TDM too), I removed the badges and fitted the akro ones as a joke between friends, mate with the T7 paid a lot of money for his pipe, I paid £3 for stickers...

Did find many poor joints within the down pipes at the Y join and splitter with protruding steel restricting the flow and deflecting sound in such a way that it could be clearly heard when I collected the bike, all sorted now as part of the full rebuild.

As collected.

Nice work there. :good:

I think you need to be a supporting member to post up in the gallery.  You'll also need to be a sportin if you intend to post up a fair few more photos as there's a small limit for non-sportin members.  If you want to be a supporting member the fee is £5 and you prolly won't have to pay every year.  Just hit the subscriptions button at the top menu to join up. :)  Sportins get a 50MB upload allowance and can post up in the gallery and write a blog etc.

Looks like you relocated the reg/rec to the left side of the frame, have you used Rivnuts or some such option ! Good job  :good:

Wow, that looks stunning.

The reg/rec changed sides at some point Dablik, I'm pretty sure mine was the other side from Tony's.

I'm up for supporting member, it's worth £5 just for the info regarding the misting oil leak caused by badly fitted output shaft seal that I read about when encountering the nasty mess around the rear of my bike.

The reg/rec is actually fitted to a factory bracket on the frame, there's an identical bracket on the right side so I have a choice on this one, the bike was registered new (UK) march 1997 making it a year newer than the MK2 I had, haven't done any research into numbers yet but had assumed it was left over showroom stock that would have been manufactured prior to the MK2 being launched... just a baseless thought but perhaps there were some design anomolies during the model change?

Btw....I paid 7k in 97...the guy that bought the 96 4TX2 in 2005 paid 4k !!

Thought the left side was in the US, looking at the pictures though i can see what appears to be a reg/rec bracket on the right side also ?

Warms me cockles to see a 3vd being resurrected and loved rather than broken up and sold for bits. There's probably enough left-overs from broken, unloved 3vds to build hundreds of 3vds. Nice find, dirtbikebf.
