Despite keep my battery in the house and regularly charging on the optimate it won't turn bike over. So now is the time for a lithium upgrade. Also my clutch seems to be sticking from my turning wheel by hand. Side off engine time, I got all winter.
2002 900 silver,oil pressure switch with brass 90 degree conversion, RG fork protectors. Wilburs custom made rear Shock with remote hydraulic preload and RG shocktube, Wilburs front springs. Scotoiler with a custom made swing arm delivery unit. Silicone radiator hoses.BMW 1150 handguards with Touratech extensions, Carbon Fibre yoke cover and fender extenda, MRA flip screen, Yamaha Engine bars, SW Motech Centre Stand, Kappa wingrack three box Luggage with E21's as option from the K960 boxes, Zumo 660 satnav on Touratech mount, Led Voltage monitor, Baglux tank cover, Clear LED Rear light, Aux LED brake light, BikeVis bullet LED's under front  nose,Stainless rear axle nut, stainless chain adjusters, stainless wheel spacers front and rear, Probolt Polished Stainless Flanged Hex engine screws, Polished stainless fairing screws, stainless disc bolts. Titanium brake pins front, Probolt Titanium Flanged Hex Front Caliper Bolts & Rear caliper slide pins Adventure Spec Tool tube under rear rack, left and right sides with custom alloy mounts.<p>Top Sellerie double gel pad seat. Carbon Fibre inner dash and side infill panels. Anodised black alloy swingarm pivot bolt covers and footpegs, Nano II Gear indicator.

Hate to say this, but i've heard of enough failed batteries after being left on optimisers to remind me of why I would never use one.

 

Although lead acid batteries can be kept on trickle charge if the manufacturer designs the battery accordingly, I have never heard of one failing when it's given a regular top up charge merely once a month or so.

 

I can't say for sure that any particular optimiser is worse or better than another, and I suppose the people who charge monthly don't have an external device which they can write about after finding a possible failed battery, which somehow might have died between the two charges, so they could put it on the internet and state they think it is the optimiser, and not the battery which failed.

 

It might just be my own experience that I've never had a failed battery when recharged intermittently, does anyone else have similar experience I wonder. I'm curious to know ?

I have used an optimiser/maintenance charger for decades during the winters. No issues so far.

it was a Varta which has been fairly good Yuasa is the best but Proud Virking has a lithium iron phosphate has to be seen to be believed, it's tiny but cranks out the amps. I will be going for a full size one, but they are a bit spendy.

Ahh a minimate. Lots on here with premature battery fail over the years after minimating.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

I think another one i heard of was also a battery desulphator which was only supposed to be used if absolutely necessary, but some people just left on permanently 'trickle charging'. I ran an FJ1100 for a few years and it was as a member of the owners group on Facebook that I started to hear about these problems.

 

The usual problem with battery failure (and this goes for a string of laptop batteries as well as the 6 series cells in a lead acid '12v' battery) is a problem with just one single cell. That cell then starts to limit the overall performance of the other cells because they're connected in series.

 

A common lead acid fault is that the cells are all slightly different and one cell, slowly over a period of time, drifts downwards in terms of maximum voltage on charge. The answer is a deliberate overcharge, so that the cells around it become overcharged while at the same time the low cell gets enough current to raise it's voltage upwards. This is called a 'balance charge', or 'equalisation charge'.  It's worth a try with all low performing batteries if you were thinking of changing it anyway.  https://batteryunive...ualizing_charge

 

The basic procedure is to charge the battery pack to 2.5v per cell, so for a 6-cell 12v battery that's around 15v, while all the time monitoring it for loss of electrolyte, outgasing, and overheating.

 

Sulphate crystals don't grow in a cell kept at it's highest voltage, where charging causes the sulphate crystals to become reabsorbed. A single cell with a low voltage can become quite badly 'sulphated' and so an overcharge to reabsorb the crystals could take quite some time.

 

The best tool for the job is a variable power supply, which also gives current limiting control. They cost between £30 - £50

15 - 15.2V for an hour or two, monitoring the temperature and if you can, limit the current to 1Amp
