LOL not!

Just had to take out my water pump, all good, then dropped the washer in the sump, ok so a bit more work.

All good until I find the headers rotten, managed to move them, couldn't separate the headers from the collector box either, so took off the whole exhaust complete, easily done as the centre bolt behind the sprocket had never been screwed in properly and was hanging off.

Oil smelt a bit petrolly?  I then got nearly 9 litres of liquid out of the bike that only holds 6 litres in total, now starting to get worried.

Looks like piston rings in the bottom of the sump. I found the washer from the water pump though LMFAO what can I do but laugh.  The guy I bought it from obviously used a shade tree mechanic as there is as much liquid gasket in the sump as metal parts.

You ain’t having a lot of luck with that bike Mikey. Still, it should be good once you’re through with it. Good luck!

Thank you Jim, you're not wrong!

Fortunately I don't have to work everyday anymore so I can spend more time doing this and making her right.

If this has happened back in the UK I would have just given her away and got another ride, I had to do 100 miles a day to work and back, not any more!

My 850 was the same in the bottom, even down to the bits of piston ring. Although,

If there is that much sealer floating around in the bottom then you better check the strainer which hangs down into it too, mine was a screen made of of three types of sealer.

The extra 'oil' could well be petrol which drained down fromt he carbs while the bike was stationary

I haven't been home for a while, just got back and checked this out.   Thank you Fixitsan, good point I will check that out, Drewpy I tink you may be correct, the oil smelt a lot like petrol.  I have the carbs in my grimy little hands now, justy about to take off the valve cover and head.

Cheers all I will let you know what I find.

LMFAO,

Finally got her apart, pistons, rings valves and seats all in good working order, now just to find a new water pump and gaskets and she'll be back on the road.

it appears who or whatever (neanderthal) worked on her before never flushed out the remains of the last ring job before putting her back together.

Mikey, things are looking up :)

She be running, a bit rough but she alive!   Am very pleased with finally getting her going again, just have to sort out the carburation.  Half the Cali spec stuff was there, now I have cleaned her up I gotta work out which hoses make her sweet, I think I am missing a vacuum or a plug somewhere :)

LMFAO, after taking the gas tank off maybe four times I finally realised DUH, hang the f''ker on the wall and give her an IV, wow how much easier was that then?

She's running but still a bit dodgy in the midrange, idle goes up and down a little and throttle return/deceleration is slower than I expected.  Gonna drain the rad later and just double check my cam chain rebuild and make sure it's all where it's supposed to be.

Anyone know what to expect running wise if she's just a toof owt?

Thanks

Mikey

With a tooth out it would probably be rubbish all over the rev range, but i haven't experienced it...nothing wrong with taking the cover off and checking it

Ok so here are the photos, I took the cover back of just to double check, she looks good to me, all lines appear in the right places, also attached a bonus picture of the diaphragms I just replaced, I was surprised she was running at all when I bought her.

Thanks Fixitsan, I thought it was good, just helps me a lot with the second opinion.  The inlet does seem to be a tad out, but I think that's just chain wear.  Also inside the carbs I found a small hole on the needle valve assembly post, where the gas is monitored by the valve and sure enough the one bowl was full of gas because of this.  Now I have sealed it back up so the float should work (no more flooding) maybe I'll have a great running motor.

:)  All is good... Thanks again

Mikey

All back together and running fairly smoothly, just got a little idle needs adjusting, rest of the rev range, water pump and pistons all good, will be going out for  ride later today.  Very, very happy....

Update, she's all running, starts and idles well, runs great until she gets warmed up then runs like a complete dog through the entire rev range. Have rebuilt carbs, new choke assemblies, whilst waiting to overcome my health problems the calipers welded themselves closed on the front disc, now have r6 front calipers, great improvement over the originals. Any ideas why she runs bad when warm, I haven't managed to ride far enough for her to get really warm.

Worn emulsion tubes cause rich mixture, easy start when cold but rubbish when hot. Also causing excessive consumption. Might be worth a check ?

Running worse/bogging down the warmer it gets is a symptom of richness, could be wrong main jets or needle jets setting too rich. Factory Pro needle jets can also produce a similar problem.

Surging is a symptom of running too lean.

Have you fine tuned the carbs ?  Adjusted the carb balance.

Also, sometimes the thermostat housing starts leaking when the engine has warmed up, causing coolant to flood the spark plugs and causes rough running.  Only happens when engine is warmed up though.
