I booked my bike in to do its stanchions tomorrow just before MOT due, as the fork seals failed after 14k miles on pitted stanchions on Friday

Because I was seriously in a pinch, I ordered some 03-14 next day delivery on Friday. I only found out today they wouldn't be here in time. After making some calls, the best I could source was 2002-2003 forks.

Now, it would appear both are 43mm by 621mm so what's the difference? Is it bushing placement? Why would Yamaha go through expense of redesigning?

What I really need now is to be told it'll be fine :/

Fork springs, I'm guessing it's the internal measurement of the forks then?

Yes it's the spring rates. It's documented on the JBX site, the earlier forks had slightly higher rate springs. Both types are dual rate  (not quite progressive but better than linear) As far as I know everything else is the same

Would you expect the stanchions to work?

Yes, but It would be good to have another opinion too.

the only other difference I know of apart from the spring is the spacer whcih sits on top of it, because the spring free lengths are different.

Are the stanchions you're looking at supplied with the spring ?

Maybe a look at Wemoto web site would show if it's the same part number or not ?

Garage wouldn't put it on because of the doubts but not fussed by that puts off the expensive for another 10-15k miles

Does seem an odd thing for Yamaha to elect to do, the expense must have been quite high after just a year and a bit of production

There is also a difference in the top out spring at the bottom of the forks but they appear to be transferable. I fitted later stanchions to an 03 bike

mine will be getting an upsidedown fork upgrade at some point.

The forks on these are really nice but if the fork seals i put in dont last long i suspect the stantions are little too marked. may as well upgrade rather than just replace!
