The trick is the same for many card tricks : it lies in a modified card set.

 

The obvious bit - One card is left on the table on the first cut. - The dealer modifies it - bends - and adds it back to the pack

Further cuts

The skilled dealer is able to use the marked card throughout the narrative as a reference point and is able to cut the pack relative to this card

I wouldn't be surprised if the system requires that other cards be marked during the storyline

Also the dealer makes a great show of shuffling the cards, but I think I detect him putting them together and taking them apart as they were.

A pretend shuffle.
