Drain Bolt Banjaxed

Howdy all,

 

Just did an oil and filter change.  First one ever as its me first bike so fairly happy with that.

 

Only issue is the left hand side drain bolt looks like it has been kept on with threadlock as the thread either on the bolt or in the hole was a bit stripped.  Bolt looked fine but would come loose after tightening.

 

I put it back on with plenty threadlock, the medium one, and some silicone gasket over the washer that was on it. Tightened by hand as with a spanner it just went round again.

 

I'm not entirely confident it'll stay put. But its back on and full of oil now so not much I can do.

 

Anyone know if drain bolts are all the same size? I'll order one in case it all goes arseways.

Mk1 and Mk2 prolly the same,quite sure 9r is as well, when you say left side !! i assume you dont mean sump plug, do you mean the drain plug by/near the oil filter (right side sitting on bike) may as well empty the oil in a clean recepticle and check what's boogered, if it's the bolt thread then buy a new one and retap the hole it goes in, if bolts okay you may have to helicoil the hole. Dont think threadlock will prevent oil leak when moto's spinning. hth

 

Or do you mean the gallery bolt on left to check oil flow ??

As he said. Beat me to it by seconds!! I feel that either way, whichever side drain point, it's more likely to be the female thread stripped...ally vs steel.
Lock onto my co-ordinates and beam me up !!

04 900 - 92 mk 1 - r 1150 rs - Z550 A1 - 2x bonnies - plastic slug -XL185 - ...not in that order !! (and one or two i don't want / dare to own up to !!)

Cheers guys. Left hand side sitting on the bike, would be the sump plug so. I just called it a drain bolt. I think it has been like that since I got the bike last year, it felt wrong taking it off. If its just the sump it wouldn't be as much of a pain as the drain bolt taking it off for a look again. Bolt looked fine. Retapping the hole isn't something I really want to take on. Balls.

I'm sure someone could helicoil it in situ. A versatile engineering company would be favourite. Or even a good bike workshop.
If it were me, I haven't got the tools or expertise to do it myself, but I certainly wouldn't trust that bolt under riding conditions.

Have it booked in to get the hole re threaded, apparently not too big a deal as long as there isn't anything directly inside like a mesh or anything. And from what I remember there's plenty room. Only issue now is a short but dodgy spin to the garage on Monday with the plug stuck in with thread lock.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Yep the torque setting fer this bolt is quite high i tink,  i have read about this happening on TDM's and TRX's and it can actually split around the bolt hole.  If there is enuf space around the hole they may tig weld the split and or tig weld a deeper alloy nut in situ so it essentially increases the percentage of available thread for the bolt to grab onto.


spyball alarm/immob, bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir, forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"NitramSpecial" parking loight, tail light indicators all running on LED's & incorporate "Lite Buddies", MK7 Scottoiler fitted, taller screen, 2-2 stainless steel CCC's, Devil stainless down pipes. MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard.
engine changed july 2007 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired.

Had a look for heli coil kits Dablik mentioned, it looks handy enough but didn't fancy drilling the sump. Woulda tried if it was anywhere else.
