Hi bought bike Saturday, it came with a givi rack and plate, my question is do I need to mount the rack to the bike to support the top box, reason I ask is that on most of the pics of bikes I see the top box plate is mounted on top of the rear grab handles? Is this safe. My second question is that on my bike theres a steel bar thats connected to just under the rear light that runs to the rear heel guard, anyone know what it is, or what its for? Thanks for taking the time to read, Im new and its my first post

Very safe on the grab handles. I'll pop out later and do some pics for you

The long steel bar is to support the top rack plate but I think it's a different set-up to the grab handle mount

Just line up the plate to the existing bolts. Ignore strapping, that secures my tailpack

And just not to confuse things, ignore the crossed out bolts, they hold the indicators.

Hi looking at your pics it seems that the plate is only attached by 2 bolt? Take it thats so, and take it its safe, if you look at pics of my bike you will see the bars that are on either side of bike that go from just under the indicators, to tha rear foot peg, what are they for? The bars are made by Givi and support the rear of the subframe when there is a load on the rack / a topbox. My bike has these too and others have reported failures when using a topbox but no diagonals, so leave them on.

My Givi plate is bolted to the Yamaha grabrail but in a different way to that shown by Catsbum above, using the W-shaped plates Givi sometimes supplies.

If you do a Search using my handle and appropriate other key words you should find an old posting by me with pix and description.

ADD This thread discussing breakages includes my post #3:- http://www.carpe-tdm...=35274&p=357817

IIRC the top of the grabrail is convex and so the plate needs support under any bolts going into the edge of the rail or the plate will be flexed / bent so the box not fit correctly and the lock will be stressed.

ADD 5/12/19  This post #3 shows the mounting details:- http://www.carpe-tdm...=34995&p=354271

Later post #12 adds details.
