Been thinking more & more about an S10 as my next bike.  I love the TDM, but thinking the S10 will be a good next step.. I know there are still TDMs to be had, but as I use the bike as primary mode of transport to work I want to keep a bit more current with age...

So - I have a mate who has 2 Tenere's and he's said we can go out for a run on his.

Planning it for Sunday which looks like it's going to be a good day for the run.

I'll let you all know what my personal thoughts are once I get back...

I'd be interested if anyone has any "things to pay attention to" comments before I go...

If you buy used, perhaps a model later than 2010 would be worth a thought. The 2010 models had some probs with loose or broken spokes and broken rims. About 15 or so posted with broken rims in the German forum.

Later models did not seem to be affected.

There was a recall for the headlight wiring loom and the early generation camchain tensioners were replaced, because they rattled on cold start.

A couple of rear shocks lost their "click" on the rebound adjustment and were replaced as well. And I read about a couple of leaking shafts. But mostly the bike is bulletproof, roomy, comfy and powerful.

Did not buy one as replacement for my MKII because of the electronics problems Paul had, the weight, the shaft-drive and the linked brakes. Phenomenal long distance tourer.

I'd heard some of the early issues - but didn't realise the list was quite a long as you mention.

One of the draws to the S10 is the shaft drive as I do 16k miles a year, and I'm getting fed up of fiddling with a chain oiler and changing chain & sprockets...that said I've not done much reading on the maintenance of a shaft drive, so may need to cross that "Pro" off the list if they are more work than benefit...

At 6'3" I think I'll be ok with the size - I guess I'll find out what the weight is like on Sunday.

I like the idea of being able to tour more with the S10 - the TDM is great, but I find it a more of a commuter than a tourer personally...but that maybe just that I've not had the $$$ to get my TDM more touring biased...

I think the STen is a fantastic touring bike. Lots of torque and the stock suspension is better than the stock springing on my AT. Shaft is cool maintenance-wise. Just an oilchange every now and then and that's it. Good wind protection an da plethora of aftermarked screens from sporty low to barndoor dimenstions ;) Good range on a tank as well.

You can fit knobbies or road tyres like the pilot road4.

There are a lot of happy owners in the adv-rider forum, and I think rightfully so. The AT just fitted my profile better. I prefer chain, because I can easily change gearing and my chain lasts about 50.000km on average. But I religiously lube it after my rides ;)

The online converter says I'm 6'4" and the weight is manageable of course. When in motion not really a problem. To put it in perspective: I think my AT is too heavy as well by about 20 kilos. But I like spirited rides on very narrow backroads, where the straigts are so short, I sometimes can't even use the 44hp of my XT600. The 170 kilo of the XT are quite nice there ;)
