Hi folks.

I`ve just had my worst nightmare so far.
I`m new to motorcykles. And today I should been on my first ride with my TDM.
But offcourse.... It didn`t start.
Its a 98 modell TDM850.
I got fuel, the battery was ok, the sidestand was up, i had it in neutral, the engineswitch was set to run and the fuelswitch was set to run...
The starter engine was running, but it would not ignite.
sad.gif
Any suggestions.....

Hopefully you understand my english, its been some years since school.

Tried both with and without choke.
Not wery warm yet.. right now it`s 5 deg. celcius.... notfunny.gif But the forecast is lloking good next week.
The battery got empty, so I have to start over again tomorow.
I started the bike last week, and it started well then. Since then it was just been standing in the garage at work.

Do you put fuel stabilizer in the gas tank for storage? If not your carbs could be varnished.

I dont know about anyone else - but if I 'flood' mine - it will NEVER start until I pull the plugs, spin it a bit, clean (or even replace) the plugs.

which is good fun on a mk2...

The trick to start a flooded engine is to close the choke (ie no choke), open the throttle fully, turn the engine over on the starter for 5 seconds, then slowly start to close the throttle. When you hear the engine start to fire, hold the throttle at that point for a second or two, then continue closing the throttle until it fires properly. Release the starter button, and hold it at a high idle (1500rpm) until the engine has some heat in it. You probably only get one go at this because the battery don't have enough in it to do it a second time. Never tried it on a TDM, but it works on most bikes and carb fed cars.

I know where your coming from Steve but it can be awkward with CV carbs, they won't lift to get the air in til it starts.............. huh.gif

I think, like dapleb, that you've soaked the plugs. Its best to turn off the fuel tap on these models if you plan to have the bike lying for any length of time......fuel can drain down into the cylinders and flood the plugs.

Have you checked the killswitch? I looked a pillock outside my local Damerells a while ago, mine wouldn't start until one of the guys opened the window and told me to try the killswitch-it's fairly easy to move it accidentally. Good choice for a first bike-I'm in the same boat as you, new to biking and bought a TDM. Definitely no regrets!
