53 TDM900 = Broke down.

Symptoms - bike will not start - turns over but clock resets etc. dry.gif

RAC man and myself reckon battery too low to supply lights and fuel pump so. Sugests alternator not working. Jump starts, but less tha 12v accross battery when revving.

RAC phones their "technical people" and he advises buying a new battery. I was slightly suspicious, because they used to scam car drivers with battery sales a few years ago,

Anyway, RAC takes me to George white in Slough. I buy new battery £75 and we fit it. Same problems. Battery not getting anythin into it when engine revving.

Sugests alternator problem (just like before battery purchased) ranting.gif , so RAC man gets me recovered home. £75 quid wasted.

Is this an alternator problem? Is there a rectifier? I know rectifiers burn out. That sounds cheeper than an alternator.

Anyway, I now have to convince RAC to refund £75 for unneeded battery.

And get bike to garage for repair. ranting.gif

Well - blow me

Service Manual
- TROUBLE SHOOTING 9-6
- - Faulty Lighting or Signaling System

Headlight Bulb Burnt Out - potential cause = faulty rectifier.

I changed a headlight bulb a week ago.

===========

How come some rectyifiers cost £4.00 and a TDM rectifier costs £90

A rectifier is a rectifier ??????????????????????///

Most people who've had a regulator fail have had the opposite problem, way too much voltage when revving the engine. Mine was making over 17.5v at 2500 rpm and cooked my battery. If you can get your hands on a meter it's probably worth checking it before replacing. If there's less than 12v across the battery when revving then it sounds like wither the altenator has failed or the regulator has blown completely and nothing is getting through. Volt meter on the cable in to the regulator should tell you something but bear in mind it's AC not DC at that point, most multimeters have built in rectifier though.

Thanks TDMTAM & ChrisG

Cannot start the bike on battery.

Can start with a jump from a car, but as soon as remove jump leads, reading accross the battery terminal starts to drop. Revving has no effect on reading accross terminals.

Still considering what to do. Unfortunately summer bikers have my local George Whites booked up for the next 4 weeks.

Service manual from JBX shows how to test a RR, but only shows 3 connectors. My RR has a black socket with three connectors in, and a white socket with three connectors in. Not sure which side to test.

Probably in too deep with the DIY diagnosis. Will have to fork out cash.

Sounds like nothing comming out of regulator, but the question is is anything going in?

Haynes manual reckons trace the wire from the alternator to a plug, should be a 3 pin. Measure the resistance between each of the 3 wires (total 3 readings). Not got figures for a 900 but a Mk1 should be 0.2-0.3 ohms, and a Mk2 0.23-0.35 ohms so 900 is probably similar. Then check resistance of each of the 3 to earth, should be infinate. Anything dodgy there it's likely to be a knackered alternator, if not it's the regulator.

Thanks for the interest Guiness

Bike still with George White in swindon. They have diagnosed it as the alternator failure (3 weeks ago) but seem to be having trouble obtaining a replacement from Yamaha.

Sufferring serious bike withdrawal.

Guiness - I was thinking - we aught to track faults with 900s as it is a fairly new model. My alternator failed at 48,000 miles, that could be helpfull to other 900 owners. Are 900 alternators subject to failure. What other major component failures have other 900 owners experienced? Is this a candidate for a sub-topic under the knowledge base?

Begining to worry - RTT only 4 weeks away.

Over on ThumperTalk, I read a thread where a DRZ had suffered an alternator failure
the Board's acknowledged expert, and general all round expert, reckoned not changing the oil at recommended service interval can cause the alternator to fail to due the oil becoming thin and not being able to disapate the heat away (or something like that)

I'm a bit sceptical about it, but I thought I'd throw it in just as an idea

I am not knowledgeable enough in these things to suggest options to them. But the way the world is it appears it is cheeper to replace than repair these days - simply based on the labour involved.

I spent a few weeks trying to sort it out myself - convinced it was the regulator. So I also laid out £45 quid on a second hand flea-bay rec/reg - in case anyone interested. I assume it is good, cos all the readings from the multi-meter are the same as the one on the bike.

I shall have to stay out of the pub for a couple of Friday nights to get the budget back on track.

Also noticed chain sagging a bit. First chain and sprocket set at 30K, so hope it lasts till 60K. But once it started last time, it went fast. Hope it lasts for another 3/4 K for the RTT.

Can anybody improve my translation??????????????,

"Ver Ish ein Yamaha motorkranken menderkind; Mine chain und sprocket been kaput - Shnell"
