Took my GSA in for it's 36000 mile service last week after our Euro trip .......

 

2 days later, got a call from Service Manager, telling me that final drive bearings were about fooked !  :shocked:

 

He said if he didn't know better, he'd say the bike had been overloaded !  .......what a cheek, Eh,  Cliff  ??   :image018:

 

 

Luckily, I've kept up the extended warranty & I got the £800  arse end rebuild for the excess  - Result !

 

So am now OK for another 36K miles  :yahoo:

The Blue One : 2004 model owned 2010-2018 much loved, much missed and now living with a man in Scotland
The Black One : 2010 Model Registered 2013 owned 2018 - present.Beowulf Cans. Renthal 755s Grip Puppies,15w fork oil,DL650 handguards,givi engine bars,led spotlights,gipro gear indicator,shortened dogbones,LeeHenty CSM kit and stainless bits,Topsellerie seat,MRA Xcreen,grip puppies.PC III (dynoed). Funny that, my original OEM chain and sprockets lasted as long as that IIRC :P

:lol: must be all that torque just wrecking them me thinks :P  seems a common theme especially between 2004-2007, if i could grab a cheap 1100GS would'nt mind spending a bit on it, they hold their prices to well and dont think me pockets are deep enough, might get the poor mans GS, an XT660  :huh:

2 days later.....great service!

 

 

To be fair, I dropped the bike in on the Saturday - they are closed Sundays & Mondays - & he rang me on the Tuesday.

I'd arranged to leave it with them all week & pick it up on the following Saturday anyway, as I'm working away a lot at the moment.

They picked the issue up changing the final drive oil - it was milky & had water in it - so they had to ask me for authorisation to inspect further under the warranty.

I said yes & they found a fair bit of corrosion due to water ingress from a damaged O ring seal. The bearing wasn't too bad, but it's only the bearing & bearings, crown wheel etc covered under the extended warranty .......but to change those, they had to rebuild the whole lot, if you get my meaning  ;)

They did me a big favour doing it the way they did  :good:

And as regards the longevity compared to chains ......it's a big heavy bike that has been used 'enthusiastically' all it's life - so if the FD has cost me £50 in six years & 36k miles, I'm happy. I've got  a TDM that's still on it's first C&S's after 30K miles as well .......but my Fazer 1000 - which is more comparable needed them changing at 12k miles

Overloaded ?  Surely not. :lol:

 

Seems to have lasted longer than many have, after reading about them on the UKGSer forum Mick.  Glad ya got it sorted for little money anyhoos. :good:  Perfect for a trade in against an LC now eh ? :unsure2:

That was the warranty work ...........the 36K service with brake pads all round & a  new pair of tyres plus an MOT was eye stinging  :shocked:

 

And I'm keeping this one .......still haven't made up my mind on what to get for a new one ......S100XR or an LC GSA

I shook hands on an R1200RT this summer but had to wait a week as it needed the rear wheel flange re-call done, and I was to pick it up the next day, when I got the phone call? they told me the BMW dealer had detected a roughness in the final drive when turned by hand and suspected it was on the way out...the next day I went home on a VFR1200F  nuff said!

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

Active member of TPLQHCSRSFC and TSRMCMAS (even though a year off) and avid fan of PM not sent.

No I have a Supertenere 1200 now which suits my needs a bit better and also has a shaft drive, I 'lllet you know it's condition at 30,000 miles :good:

If it's the big bearing only that's gone (which seems the norm) a new bearing is around £45 plus a few other bits and bobs so, maybe around £70ish !! all looks perfectly doable at home..

I  believe the dealer I dealt with, sent it to "Jeffries" for overhaul and it was a quick turnround and back in the bike within 3 day's!
