Sounds like clutch plate chatter, pretty common for the TDM, rectified by fitting dimpled steel clutch plates. It can also happen if you have the wrong oil, such as a car engine oil with lots of friction modifiers

Thanks for that fixitsan, I was getting a little worried. I'll see about getting some dimpled steel clutch plates. Are they the sort of thing you get at your local Yamaha dealer or should I be looking at specialist after-market suppliers? It's just about due an oil change so I'll get a motorcycle-friendly type to that that possibility out of the equation. Thanks again.
I've seen the plates on eBay. I've had dimpled plates give me noise, but that was because the only oil I had available following draining the old oil, was a type of car oil with extra low friction properties. Once I changed the oil again the chatter stopped

I’d change the oil making sure you use some Jaso Ma spec semi synthetic first, might cure the problem.
Thanks for that. I’ll certainly give that a go. I’m all for trying the easiest thing first. Just one question, would it be enough to get the bike up to operation temperature and do a filter and oil change, or should I take the clutch out and wash it down to get rid of any previous oil residue?

Bike warmed up, old oil and filter out, left to drain overnight, JASO Ma oil and new filter added and ... SAME BLOODY NOISE. I THINK WE MAY HAVE A PROBLEM HOUSTON. It sounds most like a shot roller bearing where part of the hardness is gone and you get a “groinchy” (can’t think of a better word) sort of noise each time that part of the bearing takes load. The frequency of the groinch increases as the revs rise, but as far as I can tell, it only does that in the lower gears and disappears around 60-80km/h (35-50mp/h). Surely, it it were a gearbox bearing, the groinch (love that word) would remain. (As exam papers used to say after offering a scenario, “Discuss”).

"Groinch", is that from the same dictionary as the as the "skroink" you get on yer old two stroke when you remember that the two stroke oil needs topping up several days ago and you forgot?
Hope you get it sorted not too expensively.

Hi Wickamulla, I’m in Tasmania.
I tried to get an audio with my little dictaphone (wrapped in a blanket to stop wind noise) but the result, to quote the Irish, was shite. Will try to conscript a mate to record it on my IPad as a video as I take off and ride past. Then all I have to do is work out how to upload the video.
Oh yeah, forgot to say, no pretty little shimmering particles when I changed the oil.

Thank you to fixitsan, fanlike, chrisr, wickamulla for your technical input and Snowbird for the humour and support.
We all know that the 900 needs a little more chain slack than many bikes, but unfortunately my estimate of the required 60mm and the same number on a measuring instrument bore no similarities. After using an actual ruler to take out the guesswork, I tightened the chain a bit, added some more chain lube for good measure and Bob was my father’s brother. So basically, the noise was just slack maintenance. Sorry to bother you all.

Well, that worked well poppykle. It seems my IT skills are matched only by my mechanical abilities. I just wanted to thank you for your comment and assure you that I will be (riding those glorious Tasmanian roads) that is. Off with a mate, on a sunny, clear-sky day, in about an hour, actually.

True fixitsan, but for some of us those school days are longer than for others. Cheers.
