Ello Mates,

"Ave ya got any Cheeeze e asks, pecting the answer to be no!"

Merkin noob here.

For those of you with high mileage TDM's, what is the typical mileage or kilometer age you get between the valves going out of adjustment.

From memory, I remember Yamaha claiming 26,000 mile valve adjustment intervals on the FZ's.  I've seen two recommended valve adjustment intervals in Genuine Yamaha TDM Service Manuals, 15,000 miles and 28,000 miles.

Thanks in advance!

Possible of no use to you as mine is a 900, but mine were checked at 24k and 48k miles and no adjustment needed to date. I wouldn’t call mine high miles at around 56k now ( I’ve done all of them except for the first 500), as there are plenty on here that have done many more. Bottom line is, they wear well with miles and as long as they’ve been serviced regularly, you should be fine. As mentioned by others elsewhere, regular oil level checks on the 850s as they do tend to use a little.

Generally 24k and rack 24K miles after. I have found after the first 24k adjustment they rarely move much. They always get tighter as the slightly softer valve wears into the hard seat. Once worn in they hardly ever move. All this rely's on regular oil changes. 900's rarely use oil, 850's vary a lot

You don't do oil changes on 850's, you do top ups, they change the oil themselves....
You don't get that sort of service from a 9er!

Thanks for the replies!!

Bike has 24,000 miles on it, and I planned to check the clearances shortly.

As a rule of thumb, I like to run my valves a bit looser (.002"/.05mm) than the specs.

No specific verified reason.
