whats the best cleaning method for a spring clean for my chain. its a bit dirty and clumpy.

 is gunk a good cleaning agent or parafin and brush ? what do you  recommend ?

Parafin, brush and elbow grease... then re-lube.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

i did look for the search button as i was certain that this topic must hadve been covered at least once before,  but i cant see a search button ? am i blind ? had a good look. if there is one i didnt see it sorry .

And do not do it with the engine running and in gear, I have seen too many picture of the end result.

Where do you buy paraffin from these days? I haven't seen any on sale anywhere for years.

I got mine from B&Q and I think most DIY or stores selling greenhouse heaters would have it.

I usualy just just top the scott oiler up and go for a ride so all the muck flings off on the back wheel and the underside of the numberplate :D

I also use paraffin and brush, followed up with engine oil from an engineer's oilcan.

Seems to work okay (although I don't do many miles at the moment, so I've no idea if engine oil is as effective as other stuff)


Fuel Cans, Baglux tank cover, Givi E21 panniers, Givi Flow top box, Yamaha centre stand, Garmin Zumo SatNav,, Givi engine bars, Barkbuster S1 handguards, Powerbronze Fender Extender and Headlight guards.

So you clean your chain by making the rest of your bike dirtier. Why am I not surprised?

I use parafin with the KETTENMAX chain cleaner. Saves a bit of mess. Then Brush scottoil on, then leave it to the scottoiller from there.
Welcome to borrow it for a trial.
Lock onto my co-ordinates and beam me up !!

04 900 - 92 mk 1 - r 1150 rs - Z550 A1 - 2x bonnies - plastic slug -XL185 - ...not in that order !! (and one or two i don't want / dare to own up to !!)

Just done mine. A good scrub with paraffin, and then work in engine oil with a toothbrush, but not the one used for the paraffin clean!
