just done a filter change on my 98 import and after putting in about 1.5 litres of oil the oil level sight glass was nearly full but the manual says it should take 3.8 litres , as this is first dry sumped bike i've owned i thought i'd check and ask you lot

You won't laugh when you realise that it is physically impossible to put 3.8 litres of fresh oil back into your engine via the upper tank without running the engine first for a short while.
This will become apparent as you wonder why the last half litre of oil is running across your cam cover, spark plugs and pooling nicely down there on your driveway.
I don't know why either.
Keep the last 0.5 litres back, run the engine for a couple of minutes first and resume.

ran the engine for a few mins to fill the oil filter and i got another half litre in , so thats 2 litres in total and its on the max line

Which suggests you haven't drained out all the old stuff.
The true oil level can't be determined until you've taken the bike for a 5 minute spin around the block.
F**king weird I know. Twists my bollocks too.

The other sump plug is the bolt that screws in vertically, directly behind the filter plate.
Don't remove it now unless you'll be wanting to dropthe entire contents of the upper tank.

theres 2
Yup, there are - one is a 12mm (or something) vertical bung on/in the filter housing, the other is a 15mm (or something) horizontal sump bung on the bottom left hand side of the engine.

drained all the oil out again , refilled it , ran it topped it up , ran it again , all good on the oil level mark
helmet on , quick 3 mile spin , checked the level after a brew and a smoke and its all good
but its still only 2l of oil in it
rang all me mates and asked them , they aint got a clue either
gonna be a bit paranoid bout my oil level for a bit now and i might even carry a litre with me on the bike just in case but until proven otherwise i'm gonna have to accept that it only takes 2l of oil

Sounds like you left a couple of litres in there by only draining off one of the 2 drain plugs. In effect only doing half an oil change.

ok i'm getting confused here , is there a drain plug in the filter housing ? if there is and the filter housing is removed for a filter change aswell as the sump plug all the oil should come out or is there another bloody plug somewhere else ?

Well folks that's the first stage of his 'initiation' into Mk2 ownership passed. Well done that man.
Should we get him to try and change the battery now?
