I'm in the market for new trousers.

I commute all year so need something that is going to handle daily use.

I've got a pair of Goretex over trousers for heavy rain / winter time, which means that I'm looking for something that is shower proof - water proof, but if they can't stand the heavy stuff it's not too important.

My current Frank Tomas trousers are 8+ years old, and although stay dry with the over trousers soak up water like a sponge without them (they've had bi-annual Tech Wash & TX Direct applications, but are just too old now.

I ride trousers over boots so they need to have a sensible zip/velcro affair at the bottom of the legs for easy on/off.

I'm on a budget, so can't afford the Rukka price band - although I do have a Rukka jacket (but that was a stock clearance steal)

Can anyone make suggestions on experience...

Take a look at second-hand Hein Gericke stuff on eBay. Most of my gear came that route. You can get high spec stuff for little money and read between the lines for non-abused stuff.

My favourite textile trousers are sheltex with leather areas at hips and bum.

Do you know your HG/euro size? Make sure you get the euro and UK sizes stated and not confused. If you have a HG catalogue they are listed in a table at the back.

Recently bit the bullet and went for some goretex / equivalent gear. Initially bought Hein Gericke's top end laminate sheltex stuff but returned it immediately as the fit wasn't right. I found the legs and sleeves too short for me at 6'1". Fair play to HG as they sent me a post-paid return label no questions asked.
Then went for Halvarssons Prime jacket and Prince trousers, bought locally. Very impressed with these l am..... not laminated but otherwise ace - waterproof, warm, (come with v. clever outlast liners) and really well fitting. I get a slightly clammy arse and crotch after a long while riding, presumably due to the dryway membrane not being able to vent. With a bit of haggling I got jacket and trews plus a monster back protector (you have to buy that separately)for 695quid. Not as cheap as used HG Goretex stuff but far less pricey than say Rukka and worth it IHMO. Has just got me to Frankfurt and back in some shitty weather without issue.

Be careful with the HG stuff.  My kit is HG.  The jacket is a Master 6 (that's important, hang on!) but the trousers are Master 7.  The Master 6 range was the last of the proper laminated Goretex stuff and works a treat, it's really waterproof even in some of those ridiculous deluges we've had recently.  I snapped up one of the last-ever Master 6 jackets.  HG then lost their Goretex ticket, so the Master 7 range is Sheltex.  This is HG's "equivalent" and is said to be laminated.  However, although they have remained waterproof, they "feel" wet when they get soaked, even though you are dry inside.  It's much like a cheaper Goretex item with the membrane, not the laminate.  That said they do dry out reasonably quickly too.  There's not much laminated GTX stuff around which isn't v pricey, sadly.  I'm keeping half an eye out on eBay for a pair of Master 6 trousers, just because the jacket is such good quality.  Beware the pricier Alpinestars/Dainese stuff, it's not actually laminated when you look into it properly.  Then you're into Dane/Halvarssons/Klim - cheaper than Rukka but still pricy!

Whatever you go for, you ideally want Goretex Pro, aka GTX Pro, because this is the laminated (aka "good"!) stuff.

Like you I commute and regularly test the waterproof claims of gear - I've been using RST Jacket and trousers for the last couple of winters, these are the current versions of what I have;

https://www.rst-moto...-v-jean-33.html

I don't use any overtrousers and I've yet to have a soggy crotch from them but I also wash and waterproof them regularly.

In the past I've searched out the best deals on the net  for gear but now stick to my local dealer - Helmet City near Biggin Hill - as the customer service is worth it. I've taken back gear that has leaked and it is exchanged with no problem - I can usually blag a small discount as well.

I'll second Cappo's comments, if you can find stuff in budget the bonded/laminated goretex stuff is excellent, as it sheds water from the outside rather than the outer layer absorbing water and an inner membrane keeping you dry.  This means it stays warmer, dries faster, and is less bulky.  I got my Master 5 for about half price on e-bay.  Didn't realise HG's newer stuff wasn't as good though, that's a real shame.

I've commuted daily for over 40 years. Always go cheap. Ex police kit is good quality. Work wear companies like Brookes do cheap waterproofs.

Fully kitted, Overboots , trousers and jacket.... £25.

If the OP does opt for 2nd hand HG stuff, this bloke seems to have a high turnover of used HG Goretex in good nick, so he should find something to suit fairly soon.

He sells the same items on eBay too but at a higher price, for obvious reasons.  I have had some dealings with him, seems straight-up which is good if you might need to return or exchange stuff (no other connection with this company, I should stress!)

Good hunting!

Cheers for the advise all.

Will keep an eye on eBoo for the HG Master gear - I nearly bought a Master V when they folded the first time round, as it was in the sale, but couldn't stretch to the "sale" price :( - Thanks Cappo

The torbiker.com link it an good one to have - just a case of keeping an eye on the inventory - Thanks Wharfe

My over-trousers are Army Surplus, and jacket is Gortex Police issues, so I'm nearly with you Retro!

Thinking outside the box - I've had a couple of sets of Helly Hanson Flexothane overtrousers which I wear over leathers. Totally waterproof, made by Du Pont (only on my second pair as I nipped the material in the seat catch and a tiny pinhole appeared in the thigh area. They're light and flexible and arounf £17 from outdoor shops or hardwear stoors. commonly used as industrial waterproof clothing. Other manufacturess use Flexothane too

Yeah, they're really good - just remembered I'd a pair years ago too but on a long Euro trip UV caused the material to "dry" crack when left on the rack for ages.

Nothing worse than having a dry crack!

I'm on Halvarssons - keeps me dry all the way. Only thing is, the lower part of the jacket sleeves tend to act as a reservoir when drying up - all remaining water seems to sink down and make you start next day's ride with a little wet inside your gloves. Otherwise the jacket is brilliant !

Trousers are outstanding, simply dry and comfortable.

But as someone mentioned, a bit pricey. Think I paid equivalent of ~£600 for a set. But Norway is prolly a bit expensier

Well, I didn't express myself very clearly - the problem isn't when driving - but when the jacket hangs for drying.

The rest of the jacket dries up as expected, but the lower 10cm or so of the sleeve remains wet for a longer time. A bit awkward, but it doesn't exactly fill your gloves with water  ....
