Start bike, let it idle, ideally on a hot day. Wait - as temp creeps up fan should kick on. Unfortunately on MK1s the frickin equilibrium temp in slow traffic on a hot day is essentially at red line (immediately below). Has been discussed here before - I know because I asked myself while back. Just below red line, fan blowing, is "working as intended" for MK1.

My 2002 niner gets uncomfortably close to the red before fan comes on, checked in diags, all ok. Seems to be normal.

Its only ever kicked in once which was when it was in the garage and the bike was running.
Now ever since it did that the fan hasn't come on, Weather its because it hasn't got that hot again or the fans not working im not too sure.
If it were to go into the red and stay there for a few minutes would it do any perm damage?
I mainly do motorway miles so it never creeps up on a commute, but summers around the corner and its probably best to make sure its working before hand.

A few minutes in the red could blow yer heed gasket, and prolly more !

Would appear that is BAU??
However, if yours isn't coming on at all...there could be alternative problems.

1. Bigger fan - seems complicated, but good idea.
2. Run alternate power with switch so there's and OR condition on fan power. If temp too high OR my (manual) fan switch is on, then fan is powered. This should be doable, but I haven't drawn up the schematic. I like this idea as you could just manually run the fan w/e you want, and for me that's a good part of the summer in traffic.

Yamaha solved that problem with the mk2a LD, they removed the temp gauge

Its expensive at £65.00 a gallon but is got a life of half a million miles and can be reused. Have a look at www.racestuff.co.uk This will also be put in my tdm when i get home.

Topped up the coolant recently, but do you have to bleed it like a central heating system?
Well i guess I'll be testing it a different way then

Its not that its not coming on at all. It's the fact I don't know if it would if it were to be needed some day.
I rekon if I put a 12v current through the fan i can see if that's working and then I'd have to figure out a way to test the thermostat switch

You're well out of the red zone so I wouldn't worry.

Defo give it 12V to test if fan is working in the first place and if it is you know that your thermo switch is knackered.... like my one is!!
