BMW GS's - oh how they annoy me......

Had a great time - but thats not why im writing this.
I made a point of counting the number of GS's i saw on my travels for the week
How many did i see then?
Any idea's?
Go on, have a guess?!
Ready? You sure?
113 - ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN!!!!!!!!
No groups anymore than 3.
I saw 1 TDM 900, 1 1050 TIGER and 1 DL1000
and 113 GS's!
It just annoys me so much that i just had to tell someone as my wife just told me repeatadly to calm down and doesn't understand.
I mean, its just like the bike god has pointed down at numerous easily influenced people round the uk and said ' you boy, you have a small nob and you care too much about what people think of you - you, my son are a potential GS owner'
None of them looked like they've been treated to the abuse that there are designed (supposedly) for and one boy was just trundling along the see front at scarborough back and forth back and forth all afternoon - and he could barely touch the ground and was wearing shorts!!
How many of these 113 people would be better suited to another bike better than their GS, had their little pee brains allowed them to look further afield.
It just ANNOYS me.

Seems like they are unreliable?.....or maybe its just that 80% of bikes up there ARE GS's!

I love other bmw's and have had plenty of each - k1, k100, k1100, RT's, RS's, R's, F650 etc etc.
Actually i would say that one of my best bikes was a BMW 850R on a p plate - usual burgandy met colour and 19k but this thing had been LOVED!! Gorgeous and never put a foot wrong.
Its just the whole GS thing (esp. the 1150/1200), who have just jumped on the band wagon and appear to not be able to think for themselves - ewan and charley, although having brought us great tv and inspiration, and BMW lots of £, have got alot to answer for!!
i would buy an 850 GS or an 1100 from that era and ride with pleasure as number one they are good bikes and number two, i wouldn't be trying to impersonate a round the world traveller when i nip down to the co-op for a newspaper.

perhaps your just noticeing that the bike is well suited to the roads around that area (horses for courses) the suspenders on them GS's are just excellent especailly the front (slam on the brakes and still keep the line)
so take a chill pill and count mondeo's or summat else instead

I would never buy a GS1200 myself since every single owner I know has had some issue or other with them German tractors...
Did get a chance to test a GS1150 head to head to a KTM 990 Adventure last Friday. A riding instructor had invited some friends over to come and have some fun between the orange and yellow cones on the instruction playground. We took the opportunity to swap some bikes and see what they handled like. And I must Admit, I have never ridden anything above 250cc that handles as lightly and easily as the GS. The downside (?) of it is that the bike seems very eager to go into a corner and has the tendency to 'drop' into it.
I tried the KTM afterwards and it only requires marginally more input, but it does feel more precise (i.e. doesn't 'drop' into the corner). And the engine in it is just bloody impressive. Not quite sure whether I woul dtrade up my TDM for it though...

Me to but they are tooooooo fooking £££££££ because of the Ewan & charlie wannae be's ( not that i didn't enjoy LWR either)
I am going to be taking an F800gs out for a test ride soon But being realistic it will probably be a TDM9 for my next bike, just becuase it does every thing I need & can be had for reasonable £££££.
Not all GS owners are that bad.
One of the staff in our college has just bought a new 1200adventurer with all the goodies inc the 6ft wide pannier, I am sure they are great for rallies & weekend away but he couldnt follow me on my old mkI TDM through the traffic

Seems like your mechanic friend is unable to fix modern motorcycles. The 'electrickery' is only CAN-bus. Wich means that all the sensors and whatnot communicates on a serial bus instead of a separate cable for each item.
Finding a fault on a modern system is easy. Hook up a CAN diagnostic tool and each component will say if it works or not.

Be prepared for a shock when you take out that 800. My wifes best friend had a test drive at Clarks in Brum and came out of the shop £6000 lighter. She is having hers delivered next week. This bike is very good with a fair amount of power to boot. You wont be shooting through the gears either as she had her test bike up to 80mph in 3rd with no problems. No sticky out engine bits or shaft drive but it was an extra £350 for fitting a top box (none aluminium). I went for the test ride with her and thought it was a very good looking machine. The guys at the shop even sorted out the ride height for her. They let me take out the 1200 GS and it was a very nice ride as Wicky said but imho not worth the extra £££££ by any means.
