Hi. Me again. I've just given the big end journal a quick clean with an oily 1000 grit. There's some pitting but not enough to catch on my manicured fingernails. Is this bad enough to have it professionally looked at? Thanks again.

Pedro

Sorry about the small pic. I can't seem to load it any bigger

Personally, I would have a pro look at it.  I'm sure there's more qualified peeps on here who will advise accordingly though.

Supporting members get to post larger photos.  Have you ever been a supporting member Pedro ? It costs £5 to be one if you haven't and you prolly won't need to pay for renewal for a good few years after that.

Looks to have been hot by that piccie but a job to tell at that size, it's a shame there was no size listing for the bearings or it could be undersized a bit to polish it out, at work we do .003" and .006" undersizes on a lathe with emery tape, any further we have to send away and get re-nitrided, it's a long job and takes a lot of measuring to keep the journal parallel and not oval.

You'd be best to find a local engine shop and ask them what they think, pitting is tricky enough to check in good light so from a photo would be very hit and miss.

The sporting member bit is still a bargain though.

Thanks for that snowbird. It had spun its bearing shells and locked the engine. No local engineering shops where I am so I might try cleaning it a bit more with 1000 grit but keeping an eye on the size. I thought I was still a supporting member but I noticed my username doesn't reflect that anymore. Will be addressing the little oversight on my part tonight. Too valuable a site to not spend a fiver, or in euros, 40,750 :)

Edit: subscription done!

It depends a lot on how mashed the bearing shell was - pic would be good

Ah, I didn't know that I didn't have to pay again. If its OK with admin, the fiver can stay in the carpe account, I'm happy with that. Call it cake tokens for the admin peeps. The site is worth every penny of that.

Pics of the (uncleaned) shells. They're a bit thinner and wore out the numbers and the tang but it's still snug(ish) on the rod.
Pic of the offending con rod.

I think you've been lucky and stopped on time (or it stopped itself!) I'd be very tempted to clean up the journal and rod, new shells and check with plastiguage

Seeing a bigger pic of that crank now it looks to be fairly well buggered to me, sorry to be a harbinger of doom but I'd be on the lookout for another crank and rods.

Looks pretty ropey around the fillet radius, it's not the bit you run on but stress risers there can soon lead to a big failure.

Disregard my previous post - I've just seen the bigger picture too (more ways than one) and I can see the damage Snowbird describes. I'd go along with his knowledge and opinion

It was the rhs ( as you sit on the bike. When I stripped the engine, the first thing I noticed was the dowel with the 0 ring in the oil filter housing was missing. I'm wondering if low oil pressure was the cause, not oil starvation. Cams, big ends and #1 big end looks OK.

I've left the crank and rod at a local car garage who has a specialist come twice a week for any crank work. I'll get his opinion and take it from there.Good s/hand cranks are hard to come by here in Spain as they're always buggered with lack of oil or maintenance. A friend had to fork out over a grand euros for a new 4tx crank from Germany. Again, bought the bike, not checked the oil since buying it and paid the price.

I've never heard of a r/h big end failing. If it needs repaired (and it probably does) it would be worth seeing if Grampian Motors in Liverpool would regrind it and supply shells - as long as the conrod is ok

I got the verdict yesterday from the machine shop. The crank is do-able but I need to find a shell .025 oversized than the one on it. Without the colours or numbers, how the bejeses am I supposed to find out? He thinks the conrod is caput as you can't grind those. I think I'll put the crank on the back burner and play with cleaning up the cyl/head ports

I'm in Spain, and a remote part at that so bike specialists are hard to find. If it was a Rotavator or a tractor, I'm in the right area! :)
