My Nuvi 1490 will not connect to my laptop when using a USB cable, I have tried four different cables now, they all power the satnav but I cannot get it to register as a device and so cannot update the maps. Any ideas please? I'm sure it worked before, apparently an icon should appear on the satnav to show it is connected.

Hmmm , Im not the best person with leccy stuff but do remember it took me a few attempts for it to recognise my Nav. Can you plug it into another pc/laptop? and is it registered ?

Sure you have a data cable an not just a charge cable?

Unlikely that you have 4 charge only tho.

I have to plug my satnav into pc first, then power up satnav for it to know what's happening.  If I try to connect with satnav already switched on it don't get recognised. Just a thought.

Same issue on different laptops / PC's does imply an issue with the Satnav not the cable / PC

It could be PICNIC of course :hide:

It probably is PICNIC, but I'm sure it just connected itself when I first bought the lifetime maps.

Anyway, it'll be TOAST if it doesn't work soon! GRRRRRR!

Is there a visual difference between a power and a data cable, one of the leads has

a plastic cylinder shape near one end, the others are just normal cable.

A Ferrite core as a filter against external radio frequency is in the plastic.

Maybe try some contact cleaner on the Nuvi socket?

My Zumo often doesn't connect on the bike holder and I have to give it a clean for it to start charging again

Pins 1 n 4 charge other 2 are data.
With a dodgy data cable your gear may charge but not be recognised by computer. Your PC will not see your sat navigation with a charge cable but will charge it unless faulted.
Externally there seems to be no difference, some have logos an some don't, generally the cable originally supplied is a data type. thar don't mean it ain't bust tho.
